Skillfully written and presented practical suggestions as to how to generate discussion. The organization of each chapter is particularly helpful as it lets the reader quickly identify the nature and purpose of the discussion technique to determine if it is suitable for a given context. Wide range of suggestions offered, and applicable to a spectrum of groups.

I will use many of the techniques delineated here. Some of the techniques are only slightly different from others. The referenced website is no longer available.

Good educational book.

Anyone in an academic setting probably needs ideas on how to change up group discussions, or just generating ways to get students engaged in some new way. I got this book to see how it would for a freshmen college class and I think it has quite a few good ideas.The book is not organized thematically, which might have been a help. There are suggested links, but each chapter offers one specific discussion prompt.As for the prompts, they are more weighted toward business settings where group participation is a little more expected. In an academic setting, the challenge is sometimes getting the students motivated at all! But, there are a few good ideas that I can use...and many of the business-type prompts can certainly fit in the classroom with some re-configuring.I liked how simple the book is - it describes the prompt, explains what situation it will work best in, defines possible problems, and helpfully explains why the participants might like it. A lot of time with group work, it SEEMS like busy work to the students because it isn't clear what the takeaway is meant to be - because Stephen Brookfield has provided his take that I can use that to say "here's the point." Obviously, I should do that anyway, but a lot of times I forget that students can't magically read my mind. Brookfield's summary is useful in that regard."Hatful of quotes" for instance - it would push students to respond to a specific part of a text, and would enable the whole class to respond. It's not a revolutionary idea, but I liked how Brookfield broke it all down for me.I might have wanted more of an academic focus, but that's not what the book promised to be - and like I said, I can put my own spin on these prompts. With 50 to work with, this should give me some good ideas.

Stephen D. Brookfield's Discussion as a Way of Teaching: Tools and Techniques for Democratic Classrooms is one of my most-used pedagogy books, so I was excited to be able to pick this new book up by him and Stephen Preskill as part of the Vine program. Unlike Brookfield's previous books, this one is aimed not just at college faculty, but also at those in the business world who are seeking ideas on how to keep discussions slowing. As the authors state in their introduction, the ideas is to have this be a short, concise manual, one that "you could stuff into a pocket or purse as you walked to chair a meeting, teach a class, or run a professional development workshop." As such, this is a really practical book.The book is organized into ten categories, depending on what areas you'd like help with. This organization really makes good sense here since it allows you to quickly located strategies to help with your area of concern. While many of these strategies (like Think-Pair-Share and the Jigsaw) have been covered in previous books, it's really helpful to have them gathered into a short book that makes those ideas easily accessible. For each strategy, the authors cover not only how it works, but also where/when it works well, what users appreciate about it, what you need to watch out for when using it, and questions that fit into the protocol.I'm planning on keeping this in my office at work so I can refer to it when my class discussions are lagging. I know that the techniques in here will really help revitalize our group discussions.

 Although I have purchased dozens of learning-Spanish programs, this is one of my first learning Italian programs. And the reason why I chose this program is because it is made by the same author that made Learn Beginner Spanish bundle. And I found that Spanish program to be very effective at helping me learn how to speak real, down-to-earth conversational Spanish. By the way, I also recently purchased the learning Portuguese program by the same author.First, I will talk about what I liked most about this program. One thing that really pleases me is that there is so much content for what I paid. The program has 30 audio lessons and nearly 13 hours of recorded audio.The teaching method is another thing that I really liked. The method is so engaging and interactive. The lessons are about 30 minutes long and I don’t think there was ever a moment when I was bored while listening to any of these lessons.These lessons only feature native Italian speakers – which really helped to improve my pronunciation in Italian. And it definitely gave me the confidence to speak Italian and hold a conversation with an Italian speaker. Hopefully, I’ll have the chance to travel to Italy soon and give my Italian-speaking skills a real test drive.I believe I gave this author’s learning Spanish program 5 stars. But I am only giving the Italian program 4 stars. And that’s because my reason for wanting to learn Italian is completely different from my reason for wanting to learn Spanish.I live in a city with a lot of Spanish speakers. And I have several Spanish speaking friends. So my reason for wanting to learn Spanish is for developing friendships and relationships with Spanish speakers. And the author’s Spanish program does an excellent job at that. But my reason for wanting to learn Italian is only for tourism or travel. So I am most interested in learning very basic Italian vocabulary for dining, staying at a hotel, what to say at an airport, etc.And a lot of the vocabulary in this Italian program seems to be for people who have a long term goal of achieving fluency in Italian or developing friendships and relationships with Italian speakers or for someone who has plans to relocate and actually live in Italy - which is not why I would like to learn Italian.I still think it’s a great program. Not only will it really help to improve your pronunciation, it does a great job at helping the student understand Italian grammar without the lessons sounding overly academic. But it doesn’t address my personal needs for learning Italian. I’d prefer a crash course in “Italian For Travelers” as opposed to a program that guides me towards achieving fluency in Italian.If you have any questions about this program, please post your questions below and I’ll do my best to answer your questions.

This company makes the best language-learning Italian program when you using the audio lessons as they recommend.I gave it a very low score for the same reason I stopped using Duolingo (in any case Duolingo is a very useless program compare to this one), those creators did not think well about the words you learn first, like what do you need for immediately words like DOG, CAT, LAUNDROMAT, WASHING MACHINE, SCHOOL, LIBRARY, etc. the words that a tourist do not use at all.I immigrated to the US 30 years ago and do not remember when I used the word PILLOWCASE or LIBRARY and yet it's one of the first words they give you to learn. And during the course of the study, you repeat those useless words tens of times to remember, what is the sense to learn useless non-conversational words? CRAZY!!!But Duolingo is a complete idiocy, you will learn 80% of the words you never use or have the same or very similar pronunciation in English and like COFFE, TIGER and what the f... do you need this words when you just arrive in Italy - BUTTERFLY, HORSE, BIRD, and many other absolutely useless words.And Quiono is total absurd.

Besides allowing me to really improve my Italian accent and pronunciation with these lessons what stands out about these lessons is that the teaching and learning method really cements what you learn in your head. They're not using some mechanical method to force you to memorize a bunch of Italian words and phrases that you'll soon forget. I am actually learning how to think in Italian.When I had completed the first 5 lessons and before buying this bundle, a friend from Naples complimented me on how much my accent and pronunciation in Italian had improved. I'm sure if she were to hear me speak in Italian now she'd really be impressed.My hack for improving my Italian pronunciation and accent with these lessons is to not use the transcript. Of course, it's going to be more challenging trying to use this program with just the audio and no transcript. But if you take my advice and do not use the transcript, I can assure you that after a few weeks you'll not only learn how to think in Italian, Italian speakers will also begin to give your Italian pronunciation and accent a thumbs-up. Now with that said, from time to time, you'll want to look at the transcript just to see how a certain word is spelled in Italian.

This is a most effective way to learn Italian. I mentioned in another review that I've used several of this company's programs to learn more than one foreign language. Since I now have two friends who I recommended these lessons to and who both made the same mistake I will say this here again. You really need to get the audio program either here at Amazon or Audible otherwise you are just wasting your time trying to learn just by reading the transcript with no audio.

After trying another Italian language audio program which is very popular and which was also quite helpful, I will say that this is probably the better of the two. With the other audio program that I tried using, there was no ebook that could be purchased. So if there was an Italian word or phrase that I heard and could not understand I would have been completely lost if I had to actually write it.

I bought the first batch of lessons from this audio program about a year ago. And I must say that this company makes the best audio language-learning programs. Not only are their prices incredibly affordable, their system is highly effective. I am truly looking forward to the release of an intermediate level Italian program in this group of lessons.

I'm a huge fan of learning foreign languages. I'm also a foreign language instructor and I must say that this one of my favorites. What a great price and it actually works.

this is good spanish book

Not a good book to learn

I think this is going to really help me with Spanish. But you have to work on it yourself too, of course.

Exactly what I was looking for. Concise, easy to understand....highly recommended for anyone looking to expand their language base. I am using this to learn Spanish, as well as teach my teenage son the language.

Good digital resource

I have sat around at Barnes & Noble flipping through all sorts of spanish books and finally came across this one. It's DEFINATELY the EASIEST to read. The chapters are broken up really well towards everday situations. Compared to other books this one has plentiful of variety of vocabs to learn (also has pronunciation for it to help you say the words correctly). So I'm really confident with this one!

I've read a LOT of career books, and I really love this one. I think a lot of other career books fall short in creating real change because they don't address the inner game that keeps us stuck year after year. This one starts with the idea that in order to change your future, you have to change your thought patterns (and the author gives really helpful exercises for how to do that). Only THEN you can change your career ideas, your resume, and your job search game plan (and I loved her exercises for how to do these things, too). It's a comprehensive career & job search roadmap that's research-based and really engaging. Super helpful and highly recommended.
