About the Author

After receiving a BA in classics from Dartmouth, Nathaniel Fick served as an infantry oficer and then as an elite Recon Marine. He saw action in Afghanistan and Iraq before leaving the Corps as a captain. He is now a Fellow at the Center for a New American Security in Washington, D.C. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller ONE BULLET AWAY. Fick is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the International Institute of Strategic Studies, and serves as a Director of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation and the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy at Dartmouth College. He holds a B.A. from Dartmouth, an MBA from the Harvard Business School, and an MPA in international security policy from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

An excellent book. From the standpoint of an ordinary officer on Platoon level leading his unit in combat, and what they experienced - from beginning to end. Includes the variety of experience and attitudes they encountered with Iraqi civilians, many of who had been none too thrilled with Saddam and the Baathists who ruled Iraq.For all the 'major media' portrayals and critiques of the situation, our policies that got us there, etc., this is a side of the story 'on the ground', by the guys we (or Bush ...take your pick) sent to fight the war that SHOULD BE known and understood. His unit was better prepared, so suffered fewer casualties, than many others in Iraq - but you can still come close to understanding the price that was paid (or prices).What a shame that our bumbling leadership DIDN'T EVEN BEGIN to adequately plan for 'what to do' for stabilizing and restoring a capable government in Iraq after we had 'won the war' ...that's my thought, not necessarily his. We did that in Europe and Japan after World War II (not easy in any event) – but really fell flat this time around.

I found this book difficult to put down. Mr. Fick shares his very personal journey from becoming a Marine, fighting, and living his life (so far) afterwards. I found his sharing his struggle to be very engaging and provided me a window into what it must have been like. He reminded me again that war is a terrible thing and should always be a last resort. When it does become necessary there is no escaping the moral tightrope. Those of us who are spared having to do the fighting need to find ways to show our appreciation for their sacrifices. Thank you Mr. Fick for sharing and may the rest of your life be lived in peace.

I listened to the 16.5 hour long unabridged edition of this book narrated by Andy Paris. The last paragraph of this review focuses on that production specifically.4 stars: A straight-forward account of Marine combat in Afghanistan and Iraq from the POV of a Jr Officer.Nate Fick was a main character portrayed in HBO’s 2008 miniseries GENERATION KILL (based on Evan Wright’s 2004 memoir of the same name). This memoir was written before the miniseries but after Wright's account, in 2005. It covers his introduction into the Marine Corps, deployment to Afghanistan, subsequent training as a Recon Marine and then his role as an Lt in the 2003 invasion of Iraq.Fick is a capable writer and his story doesn’t simply cover the same ground covered in GK. You learn that he scored expert on the rifle range, was a weapons platoon commander, underwent varying rigorous courses of special forces-esque training and you also get a lot more information on lesser known members of the Recon Platoon he leads into Iraq. For example, Gunny Wynn is a much more significant character in the last half of Fick’s account due to his role in the unit organization.Fick is able to portray the demand and stress associated with small unit leadership and his boot camp and advanced training segments are more interesting than other accounts I’ve read, but this account is a more straight-forward, almost sterile one. It isn’t devoid of opinions or personal reflection, but that’s not the focus of his account. This is not necessarily a drawback, but it makes for a less riveting combat account when Fick finds himself in the thick of the fighting.Instead of a blow-by-blow combat account, we’re given one about leading competent men into modern warfare which, despite the subpar decision making skills of some of his superiors, sees him and his men through two different stints in combat without any KIAs.However this does make the book less compelling ultimately, and I also felt that his training portion of the memoir, though better than others was still a bit bloated and could have been a bit shorter.But these cons are drastically outweighed by the pros of Fick’s account, making it stand on it’s own as a story of the Wars on Terror, apart from Wright’s and later the miniseries. I also feel it is one of the best officer accounts published about this conflict, hence my scoring it 4/5 stars.In terms of recommendations I'd say check out Wright’s book, though it is from the perspective of an embedded journalist. Also check out the miniseries because it is brilliantly made, acted and produced by the people behind THE WIRE, too.Concerning modern combat memoir recommendations: the best one so far is still HOUSE TO HOUSE by David Bellavia and the best officer account is LIONS OF KANDAHAR. There are many accounts out there and I have a listmania ranking them if you’re interested.As for the audiobook: I got a copy of the unabridged audiobook on tape read by Andy Paris. Paris reads the book well, if a bit dry but he changes up his voice acting for different characters though he sticks to the same tempo throughout all the different settings. The abridged version is read by Fick himself but I haven’t listened to it and read somewhere that Fick himself wasn’t happy with how the abridged book was edited.

This is an amazing book highlighting the difficult road of going from ordinary college graduate to the super ordinary life of a marine officer, and then to war. This book was suggested to me by my son who has completed college, Officer Candidate School, The Basic School and is currently in MOS tank school for United States Marines. His statement to me was "this is remarkably accurate ". I found the book interesting, scary, and enhancing my already high regard for the marines and especially those that choose to lead as officers. This book also serves to help us focus on a difficult part of our country history, specifically Iraq and Afghanistan invasions. And the reintroduction of our soldiers into society. I recommend this book and say to captain Fick, Semper Fidelis.

Ruby centric and not much help for C#

Very good one in fact. At least if you take it straight not as another "introduction to Selenium", but as something that addresses the needs of building extensible test automation framework. Yes, it's not giving the depth of actual implementation details and not answering all of the typical questions anyone who developing test harness would raise, that's true. But it gives very good and structured strategy to approach such task, gives informative references to related design patterns and is pretty up to date on technology stack. I'm not aware of any other book on test automation based on Selenium which would address this question.The book would be less controversial and more helpful if author could throw away all "intro to Selenium" elements and concentrate more on design patterns and common culprits of building such frameworks. In other words, target audience is slightly blurred, and that results in frustration for experience professionals looking for architecture ideas and solutions, and not basics of interaction with WebDriver API (in on specific language only, which makes it even worse). Assume your readers know how to click and why not to use Selenium IDE, and you'd get better reviews.But I would not agree that review of bad practices is bad idea. I find it very useful, especially when I need to explain someone why this or that bad idea to do.Topics I really miss here:- test data management strategies in more details,- use of third party wrapper libraries and how it changes general approaches,- specifics of testing projects not so typical in the past years, like single page applications and multi web app systems,- how to address mismatches in functionality when using BDD frameworks for cross application testing,- and of course Java, it's specifics and it's specialized libraries (I love Ruby and promote it all the time, but Java is still a given fact for many of us, so stating "it's all the same" not enough).Will be waiting for 2nd, more mature edition.

Like most Selenium/Webdriver books, the first chapter introduces the Selenium IDE and Selenese which seems inappropriate base on the book's title, having the expectation that design patterns and the latest best practices would be first and foremost. Further, leaving the impression the book is another, "how to" and "some good concepts" when working with Selenium.The authors introduce a number of patterns and concepts, relating to the overall design of the test framework. Though, a number of "patterns" described by the authors are more of programming concepts, principles, or rules, such as "DRY".The portion over page objects provides a great overall understanding of the pattern and why it is widely adopted by a large number of test developers. However, since the code examples are in Ruby, Page Factories (Java) is not mention. Again, the expectation, would take the page object pattern to the next level and introduce new levels of abstraction."Test your tests" section provides a couple of great concepts on stabilization.Overall, minus the first chapter, the book starts the conversation of software patterns and principles, and that being the same as production application development. Though the book covers more "what not to do" then provide real solutions using proper design and coding. In addition, the book lacks a couple concepts, that "tests should be easy to read", the framework code should provide the intent and is self documenting, by using good naming conventions.Nevertheless, the book would help those less experienced in development to start looking for better designs within his/her code and thinking about long term and downstream aspects.

I too started to read the book as others state, but quickly realized it was not for me. Let me clarify: if I was starting out with Selenium (in some form) I would smartly elect to move directly into the form currently supported AND for test code development: Selenium WebDriver. Selenium IDE has its own script language that is not the same as Selenium WebDriver. And Selenium Remote Control (RC) has been deprecated for quite a while. Selenium IDE produces 'brittle' output that makes it fairly disposable. So to talk about other forms of Selenium than WebDriver was not all what I was looking for.My thoughts about the first 1/3 of the book are below:- Talks about using irb (Interactive Ruby Shell) for debugging and lauds its utility. You'll need to take that with a grain of salt. Every IDE's debug mode has its strengths and weaknesses.- I wish (in general) that authors would get straight to the point of suggesting a good/great pattern - and say why it is so good. This likely can be summed up succinctly instead of rambling through a handful that are bad patterns (with examples) chewing up the reader's time. Remember the phrase "Life is short"?- There is a term for his verbose phrase of "no random order". Dependency.- Usually test logs of test steps are generated to help track down issues. Additionally wrappers are often coded around object identifiers and associated methods to also help debugging issues. Screenshots anyone?- The campy sample website: awful-valentine.com? puh-lease. Huge 'picture plate' objectives that could have been easily summarized in simple text one-liners.- The author talks about the 'Big Ball of Mud' design pattern:"Adoption of this pattern is usually unintentional and stems from being developed over long periods of time with different individuals working on different pieces without any overall architectural plan." p.62Whereas the authors of the paper he refers to state:"There are good reasons that good programmers build BIG BALLS OF MUD. It may well be that the economics of the software world are such that the market moves so fast that long term architectural ambitions are foolhardy, and that expedient, slash-and-burn, disposable programming is, in fact, a state-of-the-art strategy. The success of these approaches, in any case, is undeniable, and seals their pattern-hood.People build BIG BALLS OF MUD because they work. In many domains, they are the only things that have been shown to work. Indeed, they work where loftier approaches have yet to demonstrate that they can compete." from http://www.laputan.org/mud/mud.html#Conclusion- The author quotes (w/o references):"As Donald Knuth so eloquently stated, "Premature optimization is the root of all evil (or at least most of it) in programming."Although one can argue that duplicate code, test goals, and such was what Knuth was speaking about, if one looks at his paper from where the quote comes, it is more in the context of performance algorithm-wise. Also, many test code developers like to take advantage of many good blogs, Youtube videos, and seminars - so maybe a book is not the best format for the book's topic in this day and age.

Even if I never actually planned to use the "recipes" the book fun to peruse.Each s'mores variation is simply written, with ingredients, prep work, and "building instructions" included.The book even provides a humorous toasting guide, for those who need directions on how to toast a marshmallow.Kids will love all these sweet new ways to build a s'more.A few gotta-tries are Marshmallow-a-Holic S'mores, involving marshmallow creme, Spring S'mores, involving Peeps, and Halloween S'mores involving, you guessed it, candy corn.There are even recipes for Adult s'mores included. These use booze flavored vanilla frosting instead of a chocolate bar.Or how about one with limoncello and cream cheese?For a celebratory occasion: Strawberry Cream Cheese and Champagne S'mores. I bought this cute little book as a gift for my son-in-law, an accomplished cook who enjoys surprising his friends (especially when on camping trips) with gourmet fare. He remarked on how creative the recipes were and has tried a few already. He and my daughter intend to set up a "gourmet s'mores bar" during their next camping trip. They can also use the recipes for s'mores over their back yard fire pit or grill. I packaged this with a set of reusable marshmallow roasting sticks for a unique birthday gift.

Perfect gift, although most of the recipes are either replacing one of the 3 main ingredients or adding in a bonus ingredient. Still a fun cookbook for s’mores lovers.

This is a small book with many, many ideas for a variety of s'mores recipes. It makes a great add-on gift for the s'mores lover. I bought it with a s'mores maker. Then I gathered up the ingredients so that my granddaughter could make all the best ones herself (graham crackers, marshmallows, a variety pack of chocolate squares). She is usually hard to please, but she loved it.

Excited. Planning on inviting the grands and using this with my new S'MORES hardware and new Fire Pit. Was waiting on cool weather and some is arriving.

I base my review on the text itself but the Kindle edition is a disgrace.This was a fascinating look into the issue surrounding the return of looted classical art work purchased by the Getty over the years. It is well written and develops a good chronological timeline as well as insight into the personalities involved that was not readily apparent if you read only the newspaper accounts. I would agree with most of the four- and five-star reviews here on Amazon.For Kindle customers I have this to add: this digital edition is a disgrace; I have notified Amazon. There are numerous editing errors, none of the photos are included, and there was no indication until I got to the end of the text that there were interesting and informative notes. In the "Notes" section there were two types of indicators for the notes, some linked back to the text and some did not. Some notes were preceded with this symbol "[>]" in front of the note, which links back to the text; others merely had what appears to be a page number in front of the note but the number did not link back to the text nor did the digital edition provide page numbers! Truly a disappointment.

I NEVER knew museums were into such skulduggery ! I always assumed that with their cultured airs they were cultured people of cultured tastes and impeccable standards.This book was an amazing education on how museums come by their valuable collections. This book centers on a particular scandal however, it is hard to imagine that this does not continue to some degree today.The looting of antiquities to fill the worlds' leading museums and the originating countries' fights to get the items back is a riveting read.Most museums required "incontrovertible " absolute proof of an item's being looted and sold through the black market before they would give it back to the requesting country. It was noted that this is tougher proof than is required for a murder trial ! Acquiring the treasured item....not so much proof needed. Giving it back.......more proof needed than to convict a murderer ! Amazing.It's a great read. Highly recommend it even if you're not a museum buff and familiar with all the antiquities being discussed.

The stories of illegally excavated art investigated in this book span decades of smuggling, legal battles, and near constant prevarication on the part of museums. It's a fascinating look at corruption and hypocrisies in museums, all the more interesting and surprising (to me, at least) because I wasn't familiar with these pieces of art or the Getty's legal woes before picking up this book.When one thinks about it, it's not remotely surprising that many of the antiquities displayed around the world in museums are looted or illegally exported, given the historical plunder of source countries. What's surprising is the complicity of museums, and the lengths to which the world's leading museums went to protect their acquisitions' veneer of legitimacy. The Getty and other museums used their missions of public education as an excuse to build prestige by acquiring looted antiquities, all the while declaring their devotion to legitimizing the antiquities trade.It's an amazingly well researched book. Complicated import/export laws, museum policies, and foreign legal proceedings are explained in a way that is easy for someone completely unfamiliar, such as myself, can easily follow.

Wow - reads like a thriller and packed full of information. Not only does the author expose the ugly history of looted antiquities, but he skillfully sets forth the historical conundrum. If some of the antiquities had not been preserved in American and European museums they might not have survived war and destruction. But shouldn't countries have a right to their patrimony? Even now, archeological and cultural items are being destroyed in Iraq and Syria. The brilliance of "Chasing Aphrodite" is that it puts the issues in historical context and doesn't settle for an easy answer. He tells the story through the characters and highlights moral failures of the characters. Bravo for telling the story, weaving a thrilling tale, and focusing on the broader issues. Thank you! I will never visit a museum again without thinking of this book.

The desire to acquire stuff must be one of those human traits right up there with the need for food, shelter and sex. This book seems well-researched work (if over-stuffed) on the backstory of acquisitions at the Getty in particular and museums in general. Some of the people featured in the book are indelibly linked, for good or for ill, to the museum's collection (and there is much controversy and more than one side to what's presented here). The lust to acquire by individuals and organizations fuels the looting of artifacts and the market for forgeries. On a recent docent-led tour at the Met I heard a docent remark "We have one of the best collection of Egyptian artifacts outside Egypt. And we don't have to give any of it back! " Point taken.

I was amazed at how many elite museums in the U.S. were involved in buying looted art, which is most likely still going on to some extent. This book was an outgrowth of investigative reporting and subsequent series in the L.A. Times. Interesting characters and well written. Makes me want to go back and read “House of Getty” again.
