Praise for Passion in the Pulpit Passion in the Pulpit by Jerry Vines and Adam Dooley is a must-read for every person who stands to preach. The man of God is called and charged with one responsibility—preach the Word. Proclaiming the Word is more than dispensing truth. If that is the only goal, the result will be dry preaching that produces dry Christians. The goal should always be passionate proclamation that produces passionate followers of Jesus. Masterfully, Vines and Dooley provide the proclaimer with understanding and techniques to deliver the passion and emotion of the given text in order to connect with the heart of the listener. I enthusiastically commend this book to all practitioners of preaching.Frank CoxSenior Pastor North Metro Baptist Church, Lawrenceville, GA            It would be difficult to find two more competent preachers of God’s Word than Jerry Vines and Adam Dooley. These two remarkable preachers have combined their efforts to capture the essence of biblical passion. This moves us beyond the exuberance of human energy and enthusiasm to allowing the passion and pathos of the biblical passage itself to be expressed through the preaching of God’s Word. In these pages, the preacher is relieved of having to focus on his own abilities of communication to revealing the passion of the text itself. Here is a guide to linking the emotion of the Holy Spirit in the inspired text itself to the proclamation of the Word of God. You will sail in uncharted waters in these pages and will sharpen your ability to genuinely touch the emotions of the hearers with the emotion and passion of Scripture.Jimmy DraperPresident Emeritus, LifeWayAdam Dooley and Jerry Vines have taken their combined preaching experience and years of study to produce a resource that walks the preacher through a process for identifying, crafting, and proclaiming the emotion of a text. This book is a significant contribution to the field of preaching. It should be required reading for every pastor. Robby Gallaty Pastor of Long Hollow Baptist ChurchAuthor of Preaching for the Rest of UsTo say that my life and ministry has been impacted by the leadership and example of Jerry Vines would be a major understatement. I have been truly blessed and encouraged through Vines’s many decades of faithful service to Christ, His church, and the pulpit. Vines’s new book, along with the encouraging contribution of Adam Dooley, will be one that will challenge you to a more committed and passionate pulpit ministry. I encourage you to read it, digest it, ponder it, and pray over it as it helps you continue to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout your ministry. Thank you Vines and Dooley for pouring your heart into this book, Passion in the Pulpit, to help preachers like me do a better job of pointing people to Jesus.Jonathan FalwellPastor, Thomas Road Baptist Church, Lynchburg, VirginiaI am so thankful for a book on preaching that recognizes the role of emotion in preparing and delivering biblical sermons. The concept of pathos drives this work . . . the genuine pathos of the biblical text mixing with the pathos of the Bible preacher to produce biblical, actionable pathos in the hearers. Vines and Dooley believe that the Bible is meant to stir the soul. Their instruction will help preachers develop soul-stirring messages. Jerry Vines and Adam Dooley make quite a team and Passion in the Pulpit is quite a book.Jimmy ScrogginsLead Pastor, Family Church, West Palm Beach, FloridaPreaching with courageous conviction and compelling passion is essential for effective communication. Jerry Vines and Adam Dooley offer the tools and techniques to deliver the message with life changing impact. I highly recommend this book to all preachers and teachers of the Word of God.  Jack GrahamPastor, Prestonwood Baptist ChurchPassion in the Pulpit is a must-read for anyone who longs to be a more dynamic communicator of God’s Word. Jerry Vines and Adam Dooley, two of the most effective expositors of Scripture in the world today, combine their years of experience to offer practical advice to every pastor. I highly recommend this book to any preacher or teacher of God’s Word.Robert JeffressPastor, First Baptist Church, DallasTeacher, Pathway to VictoryIn Passion in the Pulpit, a modern-day Moses and Joshua (Jerry Vines and Adam Dooley) teach us to convey faithfully the passionate convictions of the inspired authors of Scripture. This well-written manual distills exegetical insights and decades of personal experience. It is the mentoring most pastors are longing for in an engaging book! I’m delighted to enthusiastically commend this book to both new and seasoned preachers wishing to grow in effective exposition.Robert L. PlummerChairman, New Testament Department; professor of New Testament InterpretationThe Southern Baptist Theological SeminaryIt was my privilege to be a seminary classmate with Jerry Vines. I’ve followed his ministry for more than half a century and heard him preach on many occasions in different venues. In every setting he preached with the passion he writes about. My heart and mind were always stirred as he expounded the truth he lived. Vines and Dooley have joined their preaching skills, honed in the study and the marketplace of the people they have pastored, to assist us in our calling to feed the flock. Their words will bring insight, information, and inspiration and feed the desire of all who desire to grow in communicating the Word that transforms lives for now and forever.Jim HenryPastor Emeritus, First Baptist Church, Orlando, FloridaIf there was ever a book to speak about passionately, it is the Bible. In Passion in the Pulpit, Jerry Vines and Adam Dooley write to this end not only with the expertise of a scholar but with the heart of a pastor and preacher. You will find it a valuable resource to add to your library!Nick FloydLead Teaching Pastor, Staff Leader, Cross Church, Northwest ArkansasWhenever Jerry Vines speaks about preaching, I listen. For decades Vines has been one of if not the premier homiletician in the Southern Baptist Convention. In his latest work, Passion in the Pulpit, Vines joins Adam Dooley to remind us that preachers must not only be true to the content of the biblical text, but also faithful to the various emotions emitted from the text. In the words of Vines, a faithful preacher must “convey the emotions of the text rather than [his] personal mood.” Vines and Dooley have given Bible preachers everywhere a masterpiece for our weekly hermeneutical and homiletical work.Steve GainesSenior Pastor, Bellevue Baptist Church, Memphis, TNPresident of the Southern Baptist ConventionThe great revivalist Lyman Beecher was once a visitor in a church worship service and the man sitting next to him asked, “What would you do if the man next to you in church went to sleep?” Beecher replied, “I would send an usher to go wake up the preacher.” Passion in the Pulpit by Jerry Vines and Adam Dooley is a wake-up call to preachers. The vast majority of churches are hemorrhaging in attendance in these days. Why? They are not merely interested in just hearing another sermon; they want to see the fire of God fall from heaven in our preaching. This third volume in Vines’s Pulpit trilogy is poignant, practical, and potent, because although it deals with strategies, genres, concepts, and methods, it primarily breathes life into preaching. The responsibility of preaching is a superhuman task, which cannot be accomplished without supernatural power. Vines and Dooley contend that those who carefully exegete their text and depend upon divine unction are able to engage in commendable “heart preaching.”J. Gerald HarrisSenior Pastor First Baptist Church of Blue RidgeEditor of The Christian IndexPreaching properly attempted is by definition passionate. Yet much of the passion is manipulation and not a little preaching is passionless. What a happiness to see the subject skillfully and passionately addressed by two of the finest practitioners, Jerry Vines and Adam Dooley. Follow this book and you will awaken a preacher, a congregation, and a ministry!Paige PattersonSouthwestern Seminary, Fort Worth, TexasIf you knew Jerry Vines or Adam Dooley, you’d know there’s nothing in either one of them that gives you the impression their personality is gregarious, outgoing, or even extroverted. But when they get behind the pulpit and open up God’s Word, get ready. Something happens . . . something supernatural. It’s as if they no longer exist. Something takes over those personalities. That something is Someone. And that Someone is the Holy Spirit that gives them passion. What is that something? It is the Word of God. As you read Passion in the Pulpit, you’ll see it’s not the story of two preachers. It’s the story of how the Word of God preached in the power of God to the people of God in the house of God evokes pathos, emotion, and conviction. This book is worth the read. They are worth the endorsement.Ken WhittenSenior Pastor, Idlewild Baptist ChurchWhen the Word of God grips the preacher, then the passion about this Word will explode through his preaching! This does not start in the pulpit, but in the life and study of the preacher. This is why every preacher needs to read this powerful book by Jerry Vines and Adam Dooley. It will challenge them to have a much greater passion in the pulpit! Ronnie FloydSenior Pastor, Cross ChurchPresident, National Day of PrayerPast President, Southern Baptist Convention

Emotions are the Missing Exegetical LinkWhen we preach, the question is not if people will feel, but what they will feel. If we preach the emotions that are at the heart of the passage, then our congregations will feel what God intended. If we preach the emotions of our personality’s choosing—or with no emotions at all—we misrepresent the text. Discover the importance of biblical pathos and how to faithfully proclaim it through your preaching. In Passion in the Pulpit you’ll also learn how to: recognize and appreciate the gift of Scripture’s emotional coloringdiscern the biblical pathos using reliable exegetical stepsmake your sermons faithfully emotive while avoiding manipulationdetermine the appropriate limitations of emotional appeal use verbal, vocal, and visual techniques to convey the biblical emotional intent of the passageAnd morePreaching what God says without also respecting how He said it is not an option. No matter the cost, we must preach with the passion God desires.

This is a very good preaching tool for my library. Every minister should get this book to enhance your ministry.

Those who have studied preaching in seminary, and even some who have not, may be familiar with the concept that logos, ethos, and pathos are the essential parts of preaching. Much attention is given to logos, the content of epreaching, and attention is given to ethos, the character of the preacher, but pathos, the persuasive nature of preaching is often neglected or even ridiculed. This title helps serve as a corrective to that neglect and disdain. In this book author Adam Dooley provides an exploration of each topic in the various chapters with Jerry Vines providing illustration of how the principles at hand are applied in the pulpit. One chapter that particularly stood out to me was the second chapter, which serves as a warning against personality driven preaching. I do have to disagree with what was said in chapter 4 when it states, "Though the Law is not binding as a moral standard for believers, it remains a relevant hermeneutical key that helps us understand God and ourselves better (68)." Overall though this book is a helpful resource giving practical tips on how to be a better and more convincing preacher, pointing to the importance of heart felt preaching in persuading others of the truth of the Word.I would commend this book as a valuable resource for any preacher. It offers practical insight and application in an area of preaching that is often ignored by preachers and writers.Disclosure: I received a review copy of the book from the publisher for the purpose of reviewing it. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review.

“If the great things of the Christian faith are rightly understood, they will affect the heart.” When Jonathan Edwards penned these words in 1746, he did not intend to spark controversy. His only desire was to be faithful to the Scriptures. The intersection of the head and the heart is a subject that is of paramount importance. A Christian can stuff his mind with theological gold and remain a religious pauper. According to Edwards, there is no dichotomy between the head and the heart. If the heart isn’t transformed by truth, all is lost.Jerry Vines and Adam Dooley address the important intersection between the head and the heart in their most recent book. Passion in the Pulpit: How to Exegete the Emotion of Scripture argues that preachers must convey pathos in their preaching. The authors provide a helpful definition of biblical persuasion, namely, “To seek the desired, voluntary response revealed within the Bible’s logos and pathos in an effort to seek the glory of God and the spiritual benefit of an audience.”The authors strenuously maintain their thesis throughout the book and successfully drive home the point that biblical preacher must, by definition, be passionate preaching. Indeed, as they write, “Capturing the meaning of Scripture without also communicating its heart falls short of the divine mandate to preach the Word.”Various angles are explored throughout the book which alert readers to the task at hand. Everything from the need for passion, exegetical tools, and persuasive techniques are offered with the ultimate aim of passionately and powerful proclaiming the written Word of God.I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review.

**Disclosure**This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the publisher. All opinions are my own.About the Book:Biblical exegesis doesn’t stop with the words alone. Faithful preachers exegete the emotion of the text as well. It’s easy to let our own personalities dictate the emotional dimension of our sermons, but the best preachers mirror the Bible’s emotive intent in their sermons. In Passion in the Pulpit, Jerry Vines and Adam Dooley will teach you how to exegete not just the verbal content of Scripture, but its emotional appeal as well. They show you the role the Bible’s emotional intent should play in each stage of sermon prep, and:Offer exegetical steps to discern the biblical pathos Teach you how to avoid manipulation while making your sermons emotional Help you determine the appropriate limitations of emotional appeal Give you verbal, vocal, and visual techniques to help convey the biblical emotional intent in your sermonsWhen we elevate the Bible’s emotional intent above our own, we preach truth rather than personality. My Review: If you want to amp up your speaking engagements and sermons many times we have to reach out to a fellow minister to do just that. My husband ministers every month to a group of people most often than not that are forgotten. He speaks to a group of people that are retired and living in a retirement community. He along with a few others volunteer here each month. These people are so encouraging and excited to see him as well as other fellow ministers. The look forward to that interaction each week. And I have to admit my husband gains some from being around these individuals that are much more mature than we are. I love hearing their stories and many times we cry tears with them as they share their innermost thoughts, feelings, and prayers. Such strong people yet so weak and they may have forgotten many things but God is not one of them. The mark of a good sermon my husband relates is that the scripture is exegeted correctly and appropriately for the congregation. Exegeting scripture is where you have basically tore it down and expanded on it and from what I hear, it isn't easy. But lucky for us there are many ministers and pastors out there willing to share their wisdom to help us grow in this area. Passion in the Pulpit is a great book to help explain many of the notions that we as ministers would like to do but don't really have the knowledge of knowing exactly how to follow through. Passion in the Pulpit is divided into three parts: understanding the challenge, discerning the emotive design of a text, and employing persuasive techniques. Each of these points are strong and the authors are able to carefully guide us through this tricky get gainful process. This book is very helpful and is interesting yet encouraging to those of this that still have a hard time in this area.

Very disappointing. First of all, it’s printed on really crap quality paper. But whatever. The book gives barely adequate overviews of some aspects of starting your own business, if you were building a laundromat or restaurant - nothing of value for startups. Close to nothing on key topics like raising money, types of incorporation, legal roadmaps etc.

I started my own business 5 years ago and used this book as a reference. Long story short, I am now a multi-millionaire. Very little to do with this book, but it was helpful for a handful of of things.

I had absolutely no knowledge of business or how businesses work but after purchasing this book i can say it really opened my eyes as to what is involved in starting and running a business. I feel this book is a crash course that covers everything in business and will also be used as a reference when needed and where to find even more info. This book was exactly what i needed for a manufacturing start-up and i now have a 40 point to do list to get things of the ground.AND even got a bonus out of this read. The financial chapter was the best part of it all. i buy stocks and options and this solidified my understanding of financial statements that are mandatory when investing in companies in the stock market.I highly recommend this book.

Now I've taken a few business courses in college (accounting 101, Micro and Macro Economics, Statistics, etc), but I knew that starting a business would take some extra knowledge. This book was an excellent reference for me. My particular business didn't fit the normal idea of a business, but the book still helped me explore both the direction that I wanted to go and the direction I wasn't going; just to make sure that I considered what I was doing in an objective manner.I really appreciated this book in starting up my business, and it will surely get used as my business grows.I liked how many different chapters there were, because it helped me to easily find answers to my questions.

excellent book, recomand from our ASU Professor to all startup students all small businesses .

While I was a bit skeptical about making such a purchase, thinking it was only going to be a reiteration of common sense, this book totally surprised me. It contains tips on just about anything a person considering starting their own business might wonder about and need to know from what type of name to use, to how to organize the business legally to how to best design business cards. I'm extremely impressed! This is a great buy!

Something to alway have on the book shelf to flip back through. In the process of setting up a business or thinking where do I go now, kep this one handy.

a great way to really think about starting your own business is by getting this book , it will give you many ideas , and remind you of important stuff and how to organize your thoughts . my only thought is that it must be international oriented as many of the tax , regulation and helping sites are for the us.
