You’ve likely heard varying accounts of how important the admissions essay actually is: from those who swear by their writing and predict that this little essay steered them clear of the rejection pile; to others who humbly say they were probably accepted in spite of their essay. With all the academic and extracurricular work that consumes what spare time you have outside of the application process, it’s almost certain that college essays aren’t what you’d like to be worrying about on your weekends.At the same time, the admissions essay can be a boon to your application if approached carefully. Each year, college admissions rates plunge as the number of applicants grows, and the size of résumés and activities lists expands. For applicants to competitive universities and Ivy League schools, having a top grade point average (GPA) along with sporting and musical prowess may not guarantee admission. The personal statement, however, is a blank slate that allows you to share and emphasize the qualities that make you stand out. It permits you to make a creative, distinctive, and even emotional appeal directly to the admissions officers. In a process dominated by test scores and statistics, the admissions essay provides a much-needed human touch. Here are ten tips for you to keep in mind as you embark on the writing process:1. Start thinking about the essay early. We understand that it isn’t always feasible to start writing months in advance. Nevertheless, as you barrel through your senior fall, keep an eye out for potential essay topics. Read through some essays that have worked in the past to get an idea of what an admissions essay ought to look like. Consider what you’re passionate about and why. Think back through your years and identify experiences, people, places, or lessons that have shaped your character and personality. It’s often better to delve deeply into a single experience, showing that you are an observant individual capable of honest self-reflection, than to provide a superficial exposition of interesting aspects of your life. Talk about your hobbies, play up your unusual talents or areas of expertise, or describe something formative from your past. The possibilities are endless—be creative and find something that will supplement the rest of your application well.3. Realize that the topic isn’t everything. Sure, some ideas—such as winning the state soccer championship—have probably been written about many, many times before you came along, and you should try to avoid those topics unless you can add something unique to the tale. Remember that your topic doesn’t have to be grandiose or sweeping—sometimes, seemingly mundane experiences, such as that summer job you once had, can be the launching point into a colorful and telling insight. Not everyone has exotic experiences or prodigious talents to showcase, but certainly every applicant has a unique and interesting background to illuminate. Creativity, thoughtful analysis, and skilled writing can make even the most routine happenings exciting. Take the time to think about your topic from various angles and figure out the best way to couch the material; showing that you can explain the “how” and the “why” of your topic is often more important than simply stating the “what.”4. Answer the question. If you’re given a specific essay prompt, make sure your essay addresses those questions. Don’t take an essay and stretch it to fit five completely different prompts; if your essay wasn’t intended to answer a specific question, it becomes awkward and unconvincing. If different schools ask you why you’d like to attend their college, do your research and think through your responses carefully. Simply drafting a universal response and filling in the blanks will not demonstrate to admissions officers that you have the ability to think critically and to understand nuance. Finally, try to show that you’ve put some genuine thought into the essay and the question at hand. As with any good essay, use evidence, supporting facts, and examples to prove your point.5. Be careful with gimmicks. Some people have successfully written poems or drawn comics for their personal statements, but they are few and far between. If you’re confident that your creative efforts will turn out well, go for it. Just remember that, especially with this personal statement, execution is everything. A piece that is inauthentic most likely will not be distinctive in the way that you had hoped.6. Know your thesis. As we suggested before, take the time to think through your essay topic and make sure that you know what points you’re trying to make. What is the purpose of your essay? Why will an admissions officer want to read and remember your essay? What message do you want people to take away from your essay? You’ll need to think through these questions in order to make sure that your message is on point and successfully delivered to the admissions officer. Knowing these answers ahead of time will also make your writing genuine, clear, and compelling. Avoid making clichéd statements and broad generalizations—everyone says they’ve learned from their mistakes and triumphed over adversity. Be tactful, try to write insightfully and critically, and, most of all, make sure that your message is clear.7. Be yourself. The college admissions essay is a personal statement. Each person has his or her own writing style and tone, and essays should reflect that fluidity. It’s all right to include some humor and wit, but make sure it comes naturally and isn’t excessive or fabricated. While it’s a good idea to have a couple of knowledgeable individuals read over your essay and give suggestions for improvement, make sure that the end product is truly satisfactory for you. Don’t let too many people provide input, and don’t let even those people you trust manhandle the content and style of your essay. This is your chance to speak directly to admissions officers and to highlight what’s most distinctive about you, and you shouldn’t let that opportunity be diluted by the voices of others.8. Be honest. Once you settle on an essay topic, don’t fall into the trap of exaggerating your experiences or the lessons you’ve learned. Instead, think critically about your topic, even if it seems mundane to you, and try to understand and articulate why that experience was valuable for you—not why it might be interesting to the admissions officer who’s reading your essay. I'll admit, I'm definitely a procrastinator. I had a week until my common app was due and I had tried various essay topics/ideas--none seemed to work. I was getting desperate so I decided, why not buy a book of college essays as reference? After reading through all the essays, I finally had some inspiration and format ideas. I loved how there were various essays, each using a different topic, from an average day to a life changing moment/event. With my essay, I got into 7 of the 8 colleges I applied to, including my top choice. My advice to any high schooler right now would be to just read as many essays as possible (it doesn't necessarily have to be from this book. There are plenty online for free), then sit down and brainstorm until you think of something that works for you. After that...just write. It doesn't matter how stupid it sounds. You can always go back and edit (or delete it if you really don't like it) later. Good luck everyone!

I was looking for a book that would help me get on the right track for writing a perfect application essay. I am good at writing, but since I was applying to Yale I wanted my paper to be extraordinary. I used this book to help me shape my paper and throw around some ideas on how to write. I'm glad to say that I was accepted!!!! I would recommend this book to anyone looking to write an application essay!

I found this book to be helpful for my daughter's college applications. Many of her counselors said NOT to read books on essay writing or college prep, but I disagreed. This book gives you ideas and formulas to help a student write her own essay. The college application process is daunting and every ounce of help is appreciated. A great help, good book.

These essays are top notch examples of how to write a strong application essay, whether or not your student wants to go to an Ivy League College. My eldest did not as she wanted college merit scholarships and to do more with her spare time than take lots of AP classes, but certainly was helped by reading this, and I have younger teens who will benefit from this book as well.

I did not find it useful at all. A lot of the essays were not that good in quality, and even the good ones were not that useful. Once you buy it you realize that reading in general is more useful not reading college essay books. Otherwise, the book is structured well and it has a variety of topics.

Interesting and fun to read!

The essays are actually an interesting read. I had purchased this for my son to prepare for college and then rand out of other reading material on an airplane. (I don't think my son ever read it.) If you like reading essays, you'll probably like this.

Completely skips anything video related. Might better be called: "OS X and iOS USB & PCI Drivers Kernel Programming". The parts that are included are not bad though.

The word "kernel" programming maybe a bit of an overstretch. This is a book on IOKit -- the only real part of the kernel Apple allows you to make changes too.Still, I really liked this book. There is clarity of thought in the explanations in the book. The examples are appropriately short and interesting.

I was actually surprised how much I liked this book. It does an excellent job of collecting all of the scattered information about Apple device drivers. Granted, most of this information is available elsewhere, but it can be difficult to find in one location, and Apple's technical documentation is notoriously incomplete.

I am not complaining about the content of this book, but its quality.I brought this book in May, 2016, and read several pages per day after work. Today, I suddenly find that pages from 175 to 274 are missing, and I cannot even get it exchanged. I am very disappointed about it, and I don't want to buy another copy.

First of all "OS X and iOS Kernel Programming" is basically the second book on the development in xnu kernel environment, the first being of course Amit Singh's wonderful "Mac OS X Internals". While Amit's book is more of a greatly detailed overview of the inner functioning of the xnu kernel the "OS X and iOS Kernel Programming" deals more with the practice of kernel development, at least this is my impression. Based on that i find only one big flaw with this book: incomplete coverage. This is really a book about IOKit driver development. BSD file system drivers, KAuth framework, sysctl, etc. is only very briefly mentioned if at all. This leaves a huge gap in the overview since those are integral parts of the Mac OS X kernel. More minor flaws basically have to do with coding examples and lack thereof. This book can greatly benefit with the more complete examples since most of the early chapters often end the discussion abruptly without having shown the full application of the topic in practice.Nevertheless this book succeeds in a more practical and rarely discussed topics such as kernel debugging, driver deployment, file IO from the kernel, user/kernel notifications and memory mapping, thread management and user land interaction, device DMA. The IOKit focus of the book also let the authors describe a lot of device driver types. All in all this is in my opinion a long needed book to fill the gap on practical issues of xnu kernel development and i greatly enjoyed reading it. I recommend it to anyone beginning the IOKit driver development.

Fantastic translation and very useful commentaries and questions

I love this book and read it regularly. I study with several chevruta partners weekly and this is the text that we use. The translation is beautiful and the lay-out is clear and easy to read. The questions that are posed by Jonathan Slater are inspiring and help bring the weekly Torah portion into my life. It also helps me to prepare for words of Torah each week. Thank you Rabbi Slater!

This is a superb two-volume set. Jonathan Slater's introduction and commentary make an esoteric Jewish source amazingly relevant and even practical while not diminishing the scholarship involved. Every serious Jewish library should have this set. Jewish Lights Publishing has done the world a favor by making this available to the English-speaking world.

In a two book series, Rabbi Slater offers his interpretations of the teachings of the famed Rabbi Levi Yitzhak of Berdichev from Rabbi Levi Yitzhak’s book “Kedushat Levi.” In “Kedushat Levi,” Rabbi Levi Yitzhak teaches esoteric principles of Jewish mysticism. Rabbi Slater discusses Rabbi Levi’s mystical ideas for each of the 54 biblical portions of the Five Books of Moses. The first book covers Genesis and Exodus, while the second delves into Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The first book contains a thirty-three page introduction to the subject. The style of the book is to first present a quote from Rabbi Levi Yitzhak’s book. This is followed by Rabbi Slater’s “For further thought” in which he interprets some of Rabbi Levi’s ideas that he had just quoted. He follows this with “Question for reflection,” which are a few questions prompted by the prior two section. This, in turn, is followed by “Taking it into your life,” which is a meditative exercise. Rabbi Levi Yitzhak was a real historical figure who attained notoriety after his death because of beautiful legends composed about him which show his loving kindness to people. Here we read about the rabbi speaking about a concept of mysticism that is accepted by some Jews but which other Jews consider irrational and still others do not understand. It is the concept of the sephirot: God is composed of ten parts that became disassociated and humans have a duty to aid God by helping God be put back together. The “Rebbe,” the spiritual leader of mystics, has the supernatural power to help God be reassembled. Once this occurs, the messianic age will begin. Rabbi Slater takes Rabbi Levi Yitzhak’s idea a step further. Basing his view on the views of others, such as Rabbi Arthur Green, he teaches that that there is a neo-mystical view that grew out of the earlier view and is combined with American Buddhist “mindfulness.” This view prompted how Slater interpreted Rabbi Levi Yitzhak and explains why he ends each discussion with an exercise of meditation. For example, in book two, in the portion of Mattot, Numbers 30, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak tells his readers that “the tzaddik,” the righteous leader, can “make repairs” in the world because he “rules over God…. So the heads of the people have the power to incline the qualities of the blessed Holy One from judgment to compassion.” In his “For further thoughts,” Rabbi Slater writes that the tzaddik can “overcome God, overcoming the divine intention.” In his “Questions for reflection,” he asks how the tzaddik can do this and can a person who is not a tzaddik “participate in that process? When? How?” (He does not answer these questions.) In his “Taking it into your life,” he suggests that when we “experience confrontations…consider changing your perspective.… Stand in your opponent’s place, and consider the situation from that perspective…. Notice how inclining yourself toward your opponent, coming close, shifts your feelings.”

My grandson LOVES the paper book and so I thought he would enjoy this board book. He does like the sounds and the pictures but it is not the complete story and he misses some of the words. I think this would be a great choice for a toddler if they had not seen the full paper version first.

Top button doesn’t work. Not sure what happened, but one button doesn’t work. I contacted the manufacturer....it’s been a week and I haven’t heard anything. Very disappointed and will avoid purchasing anything by this publisher in the future.

Not close the original! My 2.5 yr old son had the original book and I thought this would enhance his experience but the story itself is so truncated

Our grandson loved this book for his second birthday. He loves construction equipment and the sounds were a special extra while reading the book. He always says "beep beep" when he backs up his toy dump truck. Just great.

I bought this book as a gift. Unfortunately, it doesn't make any sound, the batteries are dead. After spending $12 on this I know have to go out and buy new batteries before I can give it to the birthday child. Extremely disappointed that they would ship an item out that doesn't work.

My son loves construction equipment and this book really delivers for him. It's sturdy and can handle a 2 year old constantly man handeling it. Each page has a different construction equipment, the buttons with the sound aren't too loud that it annoys me when my son pushes them a ton, it's just a good r as before bed to help settle in.

My kid loves this book! Having a kid that is obsessed with construction vehicles I was looking for something that would be perfect for bedtime and this did the trick. The pictures in the book keep him interested and the sounds just add to that. It had made story time at bed that much more fun!

My son absolutely loves this book! He is two and obsessed with all things construction, so this was perfect for him. The book is cute and fun and everything works properly.

DK always produces quality Guides. I have always valued their Backpacking Guides and now this beautiful Guide to Costa Rica. I have found this guide to be the most informative and useful of the guides I have used. It is my 1st choice by far! It may not go into the depth of some other Guides about a specific place, like Frommers or Fodor or the nitty gritty of off the beaten trail like Lonely Planet and others, but it gives you a wonderful overview of the country and the full color pictures jump out at you. They give you a taste of what to expect, that just words can not. The 3D drawings of places in San Jose and the Central valley are really most helpful in understanding what you will be seeing and experiencing. This guide introduces you to the essence of this beautiful country. I found the maps give you a great sense of where things are. Be sure to check out this guide before making your final selection of a Costa Rica Guide.

Typically I love DK travel guides. I much prefer reading the descriptions and seeing photos of the sites and locations. This one is just too high level though. The descriptions are very brief and lacking detail. The Rick Steves Italy 2015 book is much better -- but no pictures.I also have the DK Tuscany book and its much more detailed. I've used the DK books for other trips -- Greece, Norway, and a few others, and thought they were good. The italy book though is just not detailed enough -- they should've just made it a larger book or just stuck to the regional books.

I love the Eyewitness Travel Guide series but they generally suffer from certain limitations and the New Zealand guide is no exception. It starts off with the standard historical chapter before getting to an area-by-area description and summary of both islands that form the country. This is where the book shines because it offers color photos on every page that are invaluable in helping you decide which sights are must-see and which ones you can skip if you are short on time. As you would expect, every region is covered, from Auckland in the north down to Stewart Island in the far south. All of the major attractions are covered although perhaps not as comprehensively as you might like.Next, come the sections on hotels, shopping, restaurants, and other practical needs. These sections are not as comprehensive as you'll see in some other guides such as Frommer's New Zealand (Frommer's Complete). And this really is what it comes down to. The Eyewitness guides are not as detailed as most of the other guide books. They are, however, the only series to offer hundreds of color photos to help you visualise your trip and this is an invaluable planning tool. I highly recommend that you buy this guide as well as one of the more detailed books and use them both to plan your trip. That's the only way to get everything you need to plan a great vacation.

Pros:- Nice pictures- Many suggestions for every locationCons:- Not up-to-date: as a glaring example, in this book, Arenal is still smoking (it stopped in 2010).- Not judgmental enough: all 30 volcanoes are equally fascinating (but what should you do if you have time just for one?), you can spend a week in San Jose (in fact it's a dump, and you want to get out of there as soon as possible), and everything and everywhere is amazing. As a tourist, you want a guidebook that will also tell you what you can skip and what's not worth your time.Summary: this is a good 2nd book if you have a primary book like James Kaiser's Costa Rica guide (my top recommendation.)

I already have an older copy of the DK Guide. This copy was purchased for a friend. The book is a stunning pictorial of the most beautiful county in the world. Their photos, maps and cross section drawings of buildings are amazing in their accuracy. Their descriptions of sites and cities are engaging and engrossing. There is only one problem with the book. They make no attempt to quantify the value of seeing a particular city or site. For those of us with a limited amount of time and money to spend in a foreign country, we need to be very selective about what to see and how we budget our time. For that critical element, I rely on Rick Steves travel recommendations. I feel it is essential to have both books. Rick Steves will help you navigate the travel and custom differences and get you to what is most important to see, and DK Eyewitness will guarantee that you do not miss the important details of the site.

We just returned from a trip to New Zealand and this DK Eyewitness Travel Guide was ideal. It gives all the highlights with enough detail to help you to decide what to do or see, and what not to miss. It is helpful to read before your go when planning your trip, and a valued reference guide once you are in a particular place. New Zealand is beautiful and quite fascinating. There are vast differences between the South Island and the North Island and this guide brings each into focus. It also provides the history of this country, which is fascinating and important to understand as this land is particularly isolated. We hope to go back to New Zealand next year, and we will definitely take this guide with us. It offers suggestions for day hikes and longer treks through the southern Alps, new experiences to try in Queenstown the "Adventure Capitol" where bungy jumping was invented, wine tasting opportunities throughout the country, and interesting walks through the beautiful cities such as Christ Church. In general, we are fans of DK Eyewitness Guides because they not only provide great descriptions of places of interest, but they are also very good at restaurant and hotel description and recommendations. They provide an accurate price range, and apt descriptions of the food and ambiance. We have been using these guides for over 15 years, when we travel abroad, and have found that we can always rely on the information contained within them. We find the history of each place, the timelines of events, the color graphics, maps and photographs to be user-friendly, very helpful and engaging.

This was written second, since the original was written for people who are already in a committed relationship, and single people (that's me) wanted to know how to FIND the right relationship. So it's the same concepts, but frankly not as well written. I recommend "Getting The Love You Want" and just apply the same concepts to dating.I thought this would help me *find* a partner, or help me choose better, but it mostly didn't.

This book transformed the way I see myself and relationships of any kind. It opened my mind to a new dimension of unconscious forces directing my life. It's not only helping me find and keep love, it's helping me restore my wholeness and my connection to everything and everyone. I'm so glad people like Dr. Hendrix decided to spend their lives with this type of work -- I even sent him a handwritten thank you note, I feel that's the least I can do.

Excellent if you have someone to encourage you to do all the work involved and who is educated in Relationships enough tohelp you interpret your responses.

If you are willing to do some work on yourself to improve your relationships, this book is a robust guide that will get you there. After you complete its many written exercises, you will know why the same stuff happens in all your relationships, and you will see how you have the power to unhook the painful parts and do something different.Have you ever wondered why you are specifically attracted to one particular person or type of person instead of all the others? Dr. Harville Hendrix has figured it out - that we are acting out unhealed childhood wounds from childhood in our current relationships while our partners are doing the same with us. To that end, we seek out, without realizing it, partners who will stimulate those old wounds to create an emotional "re-run" so that long-sought healing can occur.It sounds complicated, but it's not. I can't say enough good about Harville Hendrix's work. It's tough work for sure - but it makes perfect sense and it's the work you have to face if you want to heal.

I recommend anyone to read this book and others by the same author. I have really been able to put the concepts to use in both future relationships and understand past relationships. The point of this book is not to explain things as well and as quickly as possible. It's to help you use your thinking bag in a different way than you do every day. That's why it's so much fun to read.I'm a teacher at a school for people who already know a lot, and who are very good at what they do. (I teach them about power for our lights and machines.) We use big words and special names all the time. But I sometimes ask my students to try explaining complicated stuff using only simple words, because when you do that, you find out whether you really understand it. It forces you to ask, what is the most important idea here? I wish more teachers did this.Putting ideas into simple words can also help you recognize how different words carry meaning other than just telling you what something is. This is especially true for things that people often have strong feelings about, like the laws of the land, or our body parts for making new people, or machines for burning cities. Special words can quietly suggest if something is a good or a bad idea, or cover up bad feelings. Playing the game of using only simple words can help you see things more clearly for what they actually are, and say just what you mean. So, this book shows us a way to pay special attention to how our own thinking bag works. And I think that's really, really cool.

Growing up in the 1990’s, one of the defining books that helped me understand the world around me was David Macaulay’s The Way Things Work . Using “cartoonish” drawings of plenty of everyday (and not so everyday) machines, I gained plenty of useful knowledge that probably led me to eventually earn my Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2009. While Macaulay’s illustrations were straight forward enough that they didn’t need explanations, some concepts around today certainly need some words to help gain an understanding of the way things work.Enter Randall Munroe, famed “xkcd” webcomic author and an all around smart guy. In late 2012, he published a comic that described each of the systems in NASA’s Saturn V rocket with simple words. Described as “U.S. Space Team’s Up Goer Five,” the concept of using shorter, more common words to explain complicated concepts came to its full fruition in Thing Explainer. Using the thousand most common words, Munroe manages to humorously and thoroughly explain such “things” as the U.S. Constitution, The International Space Station, and the Large Hadron Collider (amongst many other common and complicated ideas).While the concept is fun and this book could easily be used to help children understand these fascinating ideas, the thousand-word constraint is also its biggest weakness. Sure, I could deduce that “shafts” were usually “sticks” (or “hallways” if they were like mine shafts), and “fire water” often meant gasoline (or some other combustible fuel). However, I often found myself trying to figure out what the actual name of the item or part in question was because the “simple” name wasn’t self-explanatory. Also, it was sometimes a challenge to read all the small text, as it usually wasn’t arranged in a linear format, instead appearing in chunks around the illustrations to be close to the parts that were being described.A unique concept to bring advanced technological knowledge to everyone, I give Thing Explainer 4.0 stars out of 5.

The thing about this book is that it only uses the ten hundred most used words by people to tell you about things that are hard to understand. It makes it sound kind of strange because you hear some words over and over again, but all in all, it is a very fun book to look at.The man that wrote the book wrote about "Under a car's front cover" and the "US Space Team's Up Goer Five" and lots of things that have to do with a "Sky Boat." There is a page about "Colors of Light" but it is in black and white, so it is not as good as other pages. There is a big table in the middle that is "the pieces everything is made of" that has "the stuff they put in pools so nothing bad can grow in them," "brown metal that we use to carry power and voices" and "stuff you drink so doctors can look inside your body" along with all the other rocks and metals and air that is really fun to look at.I paid money for "Thing Explainer" to put it under the tree for my seven year old, but I will have to read it before he does, I am sure.

Randall Munroe's earlier book "What If..." was a really, really, good read which gave me the impression that this one would just as good. However, I think this book was the author's personal exercise at word wizardry using "common" words which, at times, made the book cumbersome to read or comprehend. The one thing that the author hasn't lost is his acute sense of humor -- very engaging. I hope he'd consider rewriting this book with "regular" words such as "Atomic Bombs" instead of "Machine for Burning Cities".Finally, bear in mind, all that jazz above is from this adult's point of the view. My 13 year old, on the other hand, found it extremely funny and engaging and actually remarked that "This guy really knows how to explain things!" (No kidding!)Final Score: Randall - Texan Hawk, 1-0.
