Technology's woo and those iGods (aka Amazon.com, Google, Facebook, Twitter) who leverage technology to influence our buying, communication, querying, source of information, and interaction are often adopted and adapted to "without pausing to consider whether they are good or bad, helpful or hurtful" (p. 7). Access, aesthetics, abundance, algorithms, authority, and authenticity are key words through which technology and iGods were examined. Strengths of the book were the case study descriptions and discussions along with the very thought provoking questions within the text and at the end of each chapter.During my reading, I confess I wasn't clear on the theological discussion or the connection to spirituality. A case (e.g., Google) was discussed followed by Biblical references and discussion relevant to the passages selected but in reading these elements felt tacked on....that is until the end - the Conclusion tied together the spiritual aspects.If you like books by Sherry Turkle or Baym's Personal Connections in the Digital Age - you will like this book. Through the case descriptions and the lens or specific key words and the Biblical/spiritual perspective - Detweiler provided a super addition to the conversation about technology use within our society and culture. It's worth a buy for the questions used throughout - I can see these questions providing rich conversation starters in the classroom!One critique - along with footnotes (provided), I wanted this book to have a bibliography so I could, at a glance, figure out key cited authors and works.

It is really unfair for me to write this book because it is not the kind of book I would typically repeat. It felt like a college lecture . There were plenty of interesting things about the book but it didn't leave me to any real insights about myself and my relationship with God and others.

This important book challenges us to look at the formation of technology, how we use it, and how it uses us. We are challenged not bow to the "iGods" who created the technology or strive to become "iGods" ourselves. This book is well worth your time and effort to read as you strive to understand how technology and theology are related. Only Christ can satisfy the void technology promises to fill.

It's okay, but definately Apple orienated Used for a Sunday school lessons. Needed more depth.

I thought Craig Detweiler gave a balanced critical view of technology which was not heavy handed. His research was excellent and educational. The next time you Google, text or shop on Amazon, his analysis will make you pause.

I found this book much more thought-provoking than a simple anti-technology tirade. Yes, Google is making us stupid in one sense. But in another sense, it's making us smarter than the highest IQ people who lived 50 years ago. This book celebrates how God is behind technology, but also how it can corrupt and distract us from Him. I loved the balanced approach. Detweiler gives us reason to hope but also a profound worry about what technology is doing to us personally. I am one who refuses to get on Facebook every day, refuses to check email before I've read my Bible in the morning and take at least 2-3 fasts per year for one week or longer from all digital communication. But I admit all this is very hard.

Detweiler offers a much needed “theology of technology.” This is not your average book on faith and technology. He resists easy answers, seeing technology as neither the problem nor the solution. Instead, he helps the reader think theologically about technology, sadly a posture too rare. A sampling of this approach is seen in the following. Detweiler asks, “What is the telos of our commitment to faster, smaller, and more? How do we retain an embodied faith in a digital era?” Later, he says, “We want to appreciate the gift of technology, but we also desire to put the iGods in their proper place.” In this manner, he explores the origins and current manifestations of the Internet, Apple, Amazon, Google, Facebook, Yahoo, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. While I daily use most of these, I was unfamiliar with many of their origin stories, which directly correlate to the “telos” he wrestles with. As a teacher, minister, and father, this work radically shaped how I approach these mediums as well as my understanding of their role in our world. I highly recommend this work. As an aside, in the Acknowledgements section, he spends several pages discussing all the other recent works relating to faith and technology. That “bibliography” alone is worth the price of the book.

Born in 1964, Fadumo Korn is the vice president of FORWARD-Germany, an organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of African women and girls, and to promoting action to stop harmful tradition practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM). She lives with her husband and son in Munich. Sabine Eichhorst is the author of Courage to Defend Yourself: Strategies against Sexual Violence and A Long Way Home: Prisoner of Uzbekistan. Tobe Levin is professor of English and Women's Studies at the University of Maryland in Europe and adjunct at the University of Frankfurt. She is the editor of Feminist Europa, and the chair of FORWARD - Germany against FGM (female genital mutilation). She was elected secretary of the European Network against Harmful Traditional Practices, especially FGM (Brussels).

Such a beautifully written memoir. Talking about the subject of female genital mutilation can be hard, especially growing up where it's culturally accepted. Korn speaks from heart delivering her experience while not condemning the nomadic culture she and her family have grown up in. This book is informative, heartbreaking and heartwarming all at once!

Fadumo Korn was born into a nomadic Somali tribe in 1964, and her childhood was unusually free for a Somalian girl. Though her parents doted on her, they did not spare her the culturally prescribed ordeal of female circumcision when she was seven years old. The circumcision, otherwise known as female genital mutilation (FGM) changed everything about Fadumo's world: first the ordeal itself, performed by a native practitioner with unclean implements, and then the infection that took hold and gradually ruined her health.Fadumo was sent to stay with wealthy and politically-connected relatives in Mogadishu for medical care. Eventually, in the midst of political upheaval in her country, she was sent to Europe and settled in Germany where she married and eventually found culturally sensitive medical care. After reconstructive surgery she was able to experience bodily functions without pain, and gave birth to a son. She now works with the Foundation for Women's Health, Research and Development (FORWARD), an international NGO committed to " eliminating gender-based violence against African girls and women, particularly female genital mutilation and child and forced marriage" (quote from FORWARD's website). These practices are the cultural norm in certain areas of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and in some immigrant communities in Europe and North America. According to the World Health Organization, "An estimated 100 to 140 million girls and women worldwide are currently living with the consequences of FGM."Born in the Big Rains: A Memoir of Somalia and Survival (Women Writing Africa) sets itself and the reader a challenging task. On one hand it inspires anger with a horrifying description of FGM and of the terrible after-effects. Yet on the other hand it asks the reader to explore and try to understand the cultural significance of the practice as a step on the road to its eradication. Ms. Korn achieves both goals very well with this memoir. I respect her openness in telling her intensely personal story; she wears her empowerment well and we can only wish the same for all African women who live under the threat of this painful practice.Linda Bulger, 2010

This book was difficult for me to read because of the subject. I was not prepared for the female mutilation chapter. I kept reading because I wanted Mrs. Korn to overcome her obsticales both physical and emotional. It was hard to beleive that there are places in the world that actually allow such a practice. It certainly makes it clear that men in Somalia are the ruling force and women are mere vessels for having children and being slaves to their husbands. There was a point where I even got tears in my eyes this story touched me so much. I must say towards the end I did get a bored with all the politics and preaching. I know these things are important and more people need to be aware of it but I was more interested in Mrs. Korn's personal journey. This is a must read especially for women.

This book was such a great read. A very powerful and moving account about a woman's experience with Female Genital Mutilation. Her focus is broader however, creating the experience for any reader as if they are actually with her in Somalia and other journeys. A very easy read, this memoir is both uplifting and insightful. It captivates the essence of life as a nomad and transcends into political and cultural arenas that serve to enlighten the reader. This is definitely a must buy.

Very interesting book. I recommend it to those who are interested in a woman's story, growing up in Somalia and all the associated horrors ie FGM. Highly recommend

I work with a large Somali population in my work and this book gave me a better understanding of some of their cultural beliefs and actions. Even though I don't agree with their actions, it gave me a better understanding.

We have bought several Look and Find books for my daughter. She just recently turned three. I was most disappointed in the Doc McStuffin's Look and Find Book which had horrible drawings and was entirely too simplified. The Disney Princesses is sooo much better. The pictures are beautiful and well done. I especially like the Belle Library Page because of all the books with "letters" on them. We have fun asking her to find the book with the letter "insert desired letter here" on it. This book is definitely setup for fun learning exercises similar to the first Look and Find book we purchased (Mickey Mouse Clubhouse). The Doc McStuffin's book is not setup in the same kind of way.

This book is perfect for my little one! Is it easy, absolutely but it’s for younger children. My 3 yo still likes to look at them too. Never gets old & always something to find.-Always read the description if you want Board Book!

This is a great look and find for little ones. My daughter is almost three and this is perfect for her age and ability. The book states it is for toddlers so it is easy as expected, but challenging enough to make it fun for them.

My granddaughter loves look and find books. Countless hours of fun!

we bought this for my daughter's 3rd birthday - we have another one at home and wanted to add to the collection. She loves it. Easy for her to do on her own, but still slightly challenging. They do call Princess Aurora - Briar Rose, which confused her a bit. This is an excellent quite time activity to do with a parent or by herself.

I have two different First Look and Find books for my two year old daughter and she LOVES them! They have a little bit to read on each page about the princess, then an assortment of easier to find items than most look and finds. This book is also a huge board book, so all the pages stay intact while a two year old uses it daily!

My 5y/o daughter loves the book and goes over it again and again.

My daughter is 2.5 years old and absolutely loves this. The pictures are easy enough where she can find everything, but challenging enough that she has to work to find some of them.

I first read the Tao Te Ching in college. Somewhere along the line I lost that copy so I decided to pick up this one (especially since it had such high reviews). This copy seemed much different than the one I read years back. And I am not just talking about the author's choice to use female pronouns as well as male pronouns in his version (incidentally - how close can one get to awareness of Tao if one allows oneself to get hung up on seeing "He" rather than "She" in the teachings?).In one portion of this "tao de ching: A New English Version" ("Version" is the key word) the author chooses to translate "When the Tao is absent in a country,/ war horses are bred on the borders" to "When a country goes counter to the Tao, Warheads are stockpiled outside the cities". This author has written his "modernized" version of the Tao Te Ching and he claims to have been open in this fact, supposedly by him using the terms "A New English Version". When one reads further one in the notes you see the author admitting he does not even know Chinese (so his interpretation of the Tao is from other translations - and how he thinks the lines should read for poetics sake, or P.C. sake, etc).At first I thought I would not write a review on this book. But when seeing the author admit to what I had suspected it made me feel like I really got ripped off. If you are looking for a translation of the Tao Te Ching do not get this author's book. The author respects the Tao but this is not the real deal. I will be purposefully losing this book and looking for a better translation.

I had no idea what to expect of this book when It arrived. I turned it over in my hands and it was clearly very short in length, so I decided to just read a few pages while I finished my morning coffee.One and a half hours later I had finished the book entirely, along with my coffee, and I immediately knew upon completion that I would read this book many, many more times in my life.It was a highly profound, dare I say life changing read that dramatically impacted my perspective towards my own happiness and how I interact with others. Written as a collection of very short, almost poem-like chapters, often each occupying less than a single page, this book is a masterfully crafted guide to find real happiness and fulfillment in your life. It is a tome that empowers you, humbles you, and leads you around the pitfalls that so many humans fall into throughout their lives.It is not a modern self help book with life-hacks, habit forming tips, or other such articulations, but rather a fundamental, deep, and moving look at what makes up a fulfilling life.If you are someone who has discovered mindfulness, explores meditation, or ponders philosophy, then this book is, without question, a must-read.And if you are more of a go-getter. A driven entrepreneurial type who is looking more or straightforward advice on building your business, achieving goals and finding ‘success’, then I encourage you more-so than anyone else to pick this book up.It has helped me make difficult business decisions, cut through the unimportant details and roadblocks, optimize my time, and improve my relations with my clients and really everyone else in my life for that matter. As with so many books, we endure the scholarly and erudite reviewers who claim to know which text and translation is the most recondite, the most accurate, the most true to the original. I don't know about all that. I know Lao Tsu was so important to Asian culture and life, and I know this book makes me feel whole again with each reading. I slow down, and his true words align the iron filings in my heart.Let the educated debaters go on with their "Ten thousand things" arguing about translations and meanings. They miss the point. Get this book, make some tea, turn of the incessant rattlings in your brain and the screens in your home and relax to ancient wisdom that has influenced millions of hearts and minds for thousands of years...

This book is very confusing to read because of the way its been printed. There's no uniformity; Instead of having one verse per page and then a commentary section, there's several verses on one page with different types and sizes of font throughout so visually it looks very cluttered and crammed together and it's not enjoyable to read. It looks like a cheap, self-publishing project gone wrong. It's such an important text, it's disappointing that they didn't take more care to make it more readable.
