Mary and I have a lot in common; we come from a family of quilters. I am hopeful this pattern will work with various sized scraps. Not too much commitment from any piece of fabric. Just need a minimum of 4 squares.I read all Mary’s suggestions for choosing fabrics and pared down my original selection. I kept with the blue and red material. I may branch out if I run short. Not sure what colours I will make the rolling stone blocks.Here are my sample blocks. I am in love with this quilt. The instructions are clear, if Mary has suggested a way to do something she always references back to the instruction and page number, and the numbers are correct; love that. I am enthused! Cut all the fabric!I am paring down the size of the quilt for my cousin. Most of the quilts in this book are queen or king size. As Mary says these quilts are a commitment and you will not be able to finish them in a weekend. That is okay! I am savouring the journey. Each step of the process is to be celebrated and enjoyed. “Quilters are impatient people” but we do love each part of the quilt making process.As I sew up this quilt I remember the strong wonderful women in my family, the pioneer women who created quilts that were utilitarian and beautiful, and the new generation of quilters starting out. My cousin will be able to wrap herself in this quilt and feel all the love I have for her. I really enjoyed reading this book. I purchased it primarily because Mary Fons will be teaching 3 quilting classes I will be attending and this book is required. The writing is easy to read and flows nicely. I cannot say how great the quilt directions are as I do not take the class until mid. Aug. 2014, so I will update this review then. However, in looking over the instructions, I will say that based on similar designs, I have seen easier ways to cut and sew, but I want to see what she does in the class before I make a definitive claim here.The book contains instructions for 12 different scrap quilts that all look interesting, and I plan to make some of those that will not be covered in the class I am taking. The color pictures are really lovely, and they show off the quilts quite well. The book includes many close-up pictures of the fabric and the quilting, which I particularly like, and Mary also includes pictures of the back of each quilt.The first 35 pages (4-38) deal with what she calls "Theory and Practice" that are great for beginners and helpful reminders for experienced quilters. All the quilts in the books are for queen and king sized beds. As she warns in the beginning, these quilts "will stubbornly refuse to be finished in a day."

I love this book so much that I can't shelve it! I have read it cover to cover, re-read bits and pieces or Mary Fons' writing, admired and coveted after the quilts inside, and finally decided I'm making each quilt in the book when I couldn't decide on just one! This is one of those books that you can really READ! It's not dry and boring, but fun and spritely! I love it! I can't say enough how much I love this book! I can't wait to try my hand at these great quilts to make love under . . . ;-)

This book is amazing. Great pictures, detailed instructions. Every quilt is beautiful and it makes you want to grab your fabric and start making a beautiful quilt. I can honestly say that I loved every quilt and personally planning on making every quilt in the book! Great job Mary thank you for a fantastic book that every quilter should own.

I was so excited to order this book, and it did not disappoint! I love love love Mary Fons' writing style. I have quite a few quilting books, but this is the first that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I appreciated the descriptions of her inspiration for making these beautiful quilts, and I even learned a couple of quilt construction tips I didn't know. I had never even considered making a bed-sized quilt before, but this book has made me want to get to my machine right now and make a beautiful quilt for my bed that my husband and I can cherish! One more quick thought: I appreciated that many of the quilts aren't feminine looking it can be hard to find quilt patterns that will appeal to both men and women, but this book is full of them!

I'm a young quilter, though I have been quilting for a long time. Initially I checked this book out from the library - then decided it needed to be part of my own personal library. I like these patterns a lot, and Mary's general philosophy of quilting. I also prefer making big quilts that can be used on beds (all of the patterns are for bed-sized quilts), and the styling and photography is fresh and interesting. I hope to make a few of these soon, but in the meantime, the book will be good inspiration to flip through.

The information provided by Mary Fons is valuable for every level of quilter. This book is well written and well organized. I will refer to it often. I am a traditional quilter but I found many of the quilt projects adaptable for traditional quilting styles.

Love this book! And I'm speaking as someone who reads a lot of quilting books. There are so many books out there, yet Mary offers a fresh perspective that I haven't read elsewhere. The projects are gorgeous and I have several on my wish list already. In addition, she gets book basics right - great pics of the entire quilt, the entire back, and the quilt in use. Why doesn't everyone do this? Mary loves quiltmaking and quilters + is a true expert in the field. I am very happy with the purchase!

After seeing Mary Fons at a local guild meeting...had to have this book. It is as delightful as she is! I have only read it so far...but really want to make the quilt "Whisper". Glad I purchased.

Knowledge is power ... “It’s That Simple”! Great insight and good advice from one who knows.

I've read quite a few books about leadership, managing employees, servicing clients, etc.. While lots of these books have little tidbits of inspiration or unique approaches to certain problems, I've never read a book that offers such an innovative yet sensible approach to dealing with all the challenges that come with building and running a business. While the book speaks most directly to businesses that provide professional services (wealth management, doctors, dentists, accountants, lawyers, etc.) most every chapter in this book is completely relevant and incredibly valuable to anyone who is running any type of business that requires managing employees or servicing clients. It gives you advice on everything from how to deal with employees' birthdays to how to convince clients to make a difficult and emotionally charged decision. This book is now my business Bible and I will refer it regularly, recommend it often, and reread it whenever I need some inspiration. My only complaint is that it wasn't written seven years ago when I started my business.

Straight-forward, results-based advice that is "feel-good" and "doable" at the same time. Putting clients, employees and team-members first is not just the right thing to do, it's the foundation of a successful business. I'm the CEO of a law firm and I have long considered Larry the top advisor to my business and this book provides his key philosophies in an easy-to-read and accessible format. Larry speaks modestly from his vast pool of personal and group success that should serve a broad spectrum of entrepreneurs and future entrepreneurs. This book is a bargain compared to the rewards you will receive by reading it. This book was IT.It fed my intellect and nourished my mind.Carl Jung is a Father on my intellectual journey. I go back to consult him when I feel pathless. And he never disappoints. He is patient, knowing (real knowing- not a fake), mythical, and scientific.

How could a book by Carl Jung about Carl Jung not be fascinating? But he was hard to follow throughout parts of the book. His mental inner workings go deeper than I've ever read and, as good writing does, left me with a sense of being known on a much deeper level myself. I loved his ability to objectively observe and articulate spirituality but found it a bit dry a couple of times, being that I have a life of experiencing spirituality, as I know everyone does firsthand to at least some degree, is, I wished to read more about this by him. But it was his life's work to do it more analytically. I recommend it for the patient reader with an interest in what I've mentioned as well as good comprehension skills.

I loved this book for the honest way Jung writes about himself. He is refreshingly different from most autobiographies in general and autobiographies of psychologists and psychiatrists in particular. Most personal books I've read by psychologists are full of suspicious anecdotes about how their always brilliant insights saved one patient after another while living an amazingly perfect life of happiness and endless joy.There is none of that in Jung's autobiography. Here is an example of how he viewed his life taken from his summing up at the end of the book:"The older I have become, the less I have understood or had insight into or known about myself. I am astonished, disappointed, pleased with myself. I am distressed, depressed, rapturous. I am all these things at once, and cannot add up the sum. I am incapable of determining ultimate worth or worthlessness; I have no judgment about myself and my life. There is nothing I am quite sure about. I have no definite convictions–not about anything, really. I know only that I was born and exist, and it seems to me that I have been carried along. I exist on the foundation of something I do not know. In spite of all uncertainties, I feel a solidity underlying all existence and a continuity in my mode of being. "

A genius reveals his soul. By far the most important thinker I've read, yet human enough to show his humanity. Never claiming divinity, he brought us close to the spiritual doorways, and his book is the best introduction to the man and his inspired thoughts. I have his full Collected Works, but this book is the starting place. I am reading it for the third time.

I dont have to understand everything in the book to be aware that I was given many great insights. There are lots of things I always wondered about in my own life, and Jung and Jaffe provided many answers to how things fit together. My own myth about God and the unseen realm has been greatly augmented. Please read!

Great book for anyone interested in learning about Carl Jung. Carl was way ahead of his time, extremely intelligent and insightful. I picked up some excellent key points that has helped me see things from a better point of view. I'm barely a casual reader, so this book was a bit difficult for me to read at times. There is a lot of talk and reference to religions and cultures from all over the world which was quite a bit difficult for me to read as I am unfamiliar with most of the reference and wording, thankful for google! Regardless, I enjoyed reading about Carl and his life and felt a benefit from reading this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this unusual autobiography of Carl Jung, one of the truly original thinkers of the twentieth century. Rather than write a conventional autobiography, Jung decided, in this book, to explore how he came to be interested in the workings of the unconscious and the systematic study of its manifestations. He takes us on a journey that begins with his psychological perceptions during childhood, continues with his adult studies and synchronic experiences, and travels onward to his later "near-death experience" (as we might now call it) and his mature views on a various psychic phenomena. For those already interested in Jung or curious about his life, this book would be a fascinating read. It is a text to enjoy with an open mind, despite one's own belief system, in order to experience more fully the possibilities that Jung suggests.I highly recommend this book and have already read parts of it more than once. It is that interesting.

This is a great book for any one interested in psychology and especially those fascinates by Jung and his practice of psychoanalysis. It provides great insight into his mind, his passion for his work, and most of his theories. A wonderful account of his journey as a man and as a scientist that tracks his own development since childhood and relates his curious intuitions to his abstract and often mystical theoretical conclusions.

Astroball is a fantastic read. Reiter hooks the reader from the very first pages of this vibrant narrative, which weaves together compelling personal stories, fascinating characters, and just the right amount of inside baseball details. Whether you are a baseball fan or not, I'm confident you will love Astroball as much as I did.

What a fun read! I enjoy baseball as much as the next person, but I really love characters and problem-solving, which are the real heart of this book. And it's incredible that the author predicted the 2017 World Series years before! In the book, you get to know the guys behind the scenes at the Astros, and how they used their various smarts (like poker skills, ivy league education, etc) to build a better team than the statistics would predict. Really enjoyable for baseball fans, critical thinkers, and anyone who loves an underdog story.

I never should have read "Astroball." First off, sports, bleh. What a waste of time. Second, Ben Reiter is one of several Yalies named Ben with whom I’ve hungout over the years and not the one I hit it off with most. But I confused him with a closer acquaintance and requested an advance copy. By the time I noticed Reiter’s suave smirk on the rear dust jacket, I’d already finished the preface and the prologue (yes, it has both, and yes, you should read both), and I couldn’t have put the book down if I’d tried.That’s because "Astroball" is about baseball the way "Remember the Titans" is about football. Sure, Reiter explains how the Astros went from being the team with the worst track record and prospects in the league to winning the 2017 World Series. But the consummate storyteller uses his unusual level of access to both players and the Astros front office to interweave dramas with much more widespread appeal: How an industry undergoes a revolution. How a parent’s fidelity to their inner compass can transform the course of a child’s life. How peeling back the layers of a professional victory almost always reveals some combination of hustle, skill, and luck, but mostly hustle. How a liability in one context becomes an asset in another. How organizational change done right looks a lot like nation-building. How a supportive romantic partner behaves in a crisis. Astroball well explains the data driven decision making approach, which, while the many successes are discussed at length, the stellar selection of Springer, Verlander and Bregman being discussed at great length, it also admits to the mega-mistake the Astros had made - the biggest being the release of J.D. Martinez - and what Luhnow had learned from it.Most interesting to me was the unbelievable two contributions to winning the World Series by an Astros player who had no at-bats during those seven games, Carlos Beltran.Bottom line, Astroball is an incredible story of modern day baseball. It clearly explains how data analytics synthesized with experience-based scouting have resulted in league beating baseball.

This is a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at so many and varied decision making processes. The author does a great job of following good and poor decisions, explaining the processes and the people. I love George Springer, Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman, but thought Carlos Correa was a little too polished (maybe calculating) in his demeanor. (To me, the wedding proposal took away from George and his series MVP performance.) There may be some truth to that, but it is because he has been planning this, in a mature, thoughtful manner, against great odds for a long time. More power to him! And I too wanted to understand Carlos Beltran's and Brian McCann's locker room contributions. I do wish there was more dugout and locker room conversations and exchanges - maybe that's for another book. "Astroball" still gets 5 stars from me!

I bought this because I am an Astros fan from Colt .45 day 1. I bought unseen and with some trepidation that it was going heavy into the mathmatical, statistical side, which is fine for folks with sharper minds than mine, but I am all about people. This book has all my favorite people!! It was a facinating account of the underbelly of winning Astros baseball that I would never of seen otherwise. I hope Jim Crane gave Ben Reiter a WS ring too!
