Don't you love it when the second book in a series you've started is even better than the first one? That happened for me with Froi of the Exiles, the second book of The Lumatere Chronicles. It certainly has something to do with the fact that I was already invested in the characters and their world after reading Finnikin of the Rock. But, more than that, it was the fact that the novel boasted an epic adventure that I had the hardest time putting down for breaks.Right off the bat, I was pleased with the fact that it is a story we experience through Froi's eyes. His character was very fascinating in the first book, and his story just furthered my appreciation for him. There were still a few qualities that remained from when he first appears in Finnikin, such as his temper and his impulsiveness. However, thanks to his life in Lumatere, he possesses a bit more maturity, control and discipline when it comes to his actions. His loyalty to his king, queen and the guard was unparalleled, and the fact that he really persisted in keeping his bond was testament to that. What really got to me in this book though, was the fact that Froi demonstrated quite a bit of compassion and unselfishness, even when it came to the Charynites.I won't say too much about Quintana here, as I'm sure I'll have more to talk about after I read the third book. But she struck me as a strange, complex, cursed character. It was really confusing to first meet her, but upon learning more about her and her situation, my heart just really went out to her. That's quite a burden for anyone to have to deal with, and I'm dying to see how it all plays out.As with Finnikin, the secondary characters also get a chance to shine. While it was a pleasure to revisit Isaboe, Finnikin, Tesadora, Perri, Beatriss and Trevanion, my favorite characters from this time around were Lucian and Phaedra. They begin the book completely misunderstanding each other, but to watch how their relationship develops over time was pretty wonderful and heartbreaking.While I loved the characters, the story was definitely the reason I gave this one a 5 star rating on Goodreads. Unlike Finnikin, it was jam-packed with action, reflection and interactions and I loved that. The story is intense, fraught with revelations that made me drop my jaw and moments that had me holding my breath. While we mostly follow Froi's experience in Charyn, we're also given little glimpses of the others: Finnikin, Isaboe dealing with things in Lumatere, Beatriss dealing with the problems of her people and Lucian dealing with the Monts and the Charynites seeking refuge. Though this could have potentially been confusing, it was easy to follow and not lose track of the story for each character.I got so swept up in the story that the ending of Froi of the Exiles nearly killed me with how much of a cliffhanger it is. Unlike Finnikin, which felt resolved at the end, there was still a lot hanging in the balance at the ending of this book. I can't imagine how it must have felt for the people who read this when it first came out and had to wait for Quintana because just the idea of having to wait makes me squirm. There are so many unanswered questions - and I'm so glad that I don't have to wait since Quintana is releasing in the USA today!Froi of the Exiles was obviously an excellent follow-up to Finnikin of the Rock. I loved it a whole lot, especially because it was reminiscent of fantasies I've read and loved before. I loved getting to know the characters from Finnikin a lot better, as well as meeting the new characters. I loved exploring Charyn, which sounds like a place that's foreign and strange and very, very interesting. I loved, most of all, the twists and turns of this story and how Marchetta seems to have carefully fixed everything into place for this tale. This is such a wonderful fantasy novel, and I'm eager and nervous to read Quintana of Charyn.

Sometimes I ask myself what the secret formula is to writing a great fantasy novel and I think of all of the ones I love the most and for me it is the layers. The best stories have overlapping layers to the characters, plots, arcs, histories and worlds. Melina Marchetta is a weaver of those layers until there is a seamless work of art.I was afraid that we would leave Finnikin and Isaboe behind on this new journey with Froi but I was happily surprised that the characters I loved from the first book are all over in this one as well. We join them three years after Finnikin of the rock where we see that Isaboe and Finnikin have been busy indeed. Presented with a great opportunity to get revenge against the King of Charyn, Froi is sent to the palace to assassinate him. But Froi is not who he thinks he is and the princess is not at all what he expected. That is when it all gets confusing. Should he follow the orders of his bond to Lumatere and the Queen, is he the one destined to break the curse that has been placed on all of Charyn or is there another purpose for him still?”In a kinder world,” he whispered, “one I promise you I’ve seen, men and women flirt and dance and love with only the fear of what it would mean without the other in their lives.”I think the greatest gift that Isaboe and Finnikin gave Froi is that they showed him that kinder world so that he could see the potential for good in people. When first meeting Quintana it seems that she is start raving mad, but she is a survivor and somehow she calls to him in a way he never expected. I loved their half crazed talk and how Quintana saw the world. Her story is completely tragic and broke my heart a little. After hating Charyn in Finnikin of the Rock for the turmoil they caused in Lumatere for Isaboe and her family it made me hate only the king and not his daughter who was as much a prisoner as anyone in Lumatere.“Until three years ago, I couldn’t read and write, I couldn’t ride a horse or shoot an arrow and didn’t know the difference between a turnip seed and grain. The men who have taught me everything back home, they often say to me, ‘Froi, what if all your talents were left undiscovered?’”He looked up at them. “It’s the same with her. Imagine who she would be if we unleashed her onto the world. I think she would rip the breath from all of us.”Quintana is such a complex character and seeing her through Froi’s eyes and how he picks out the sections of her is amazingly written. The backstory for this is huge and so intricate that it could be an entire series all on its own. I don’t want to give much of that away as the pieces were doled out perfectly. I only guessed part of Froi’s true identity everything else well all I can say was I was WOWed by the complexity and brilliance of it.There are great epic loves, tragedy, hope, sacrifices and every other situation that will tug at your heart and make you love this world. I was so drawn in I cried at parts and laughed out loud at others. There is a great balance so that you are not overwhelmed by some of the horrors told throughout.Warning: This ends with a few cliffies so have Quintana of Charyn ready to go because you will want to dive right in. Also even though it is categorized Young Adult (YA), some of the situations and content are probably better suited to the upper end of that spectrum and I would say that this is probably good for 15-16+I can’t say enough how much I loved this series.Dec 27, 2013I can not write a review right now because I have to read the next book asap. I will give this more time to review once I'm done with the series....Can I just say WOW-Freaking-WOW-WOW.

The author Smee is clearly in tune with the artist Freud, so the sometimes difficult going of reading about paintings and painters isn't to be found here. Others have noted the small format and less than stellar quality of the reproductions. Fair enough, but the range of artwork presented is very good, and if you like the artist you'll be encouraged to seek out other sources of the material. I'd really like to see the original of that outstanding cover painting of the Queen of England, for example.

Having little knowledge of art and artists, I saw a short biography of Lucian Freud and his art in a magazine which made me want to know more. I found this small book very insightful about both the art and the man. It detailed the focus of the art in ways my untrained eye could not discern. I, in short, needed help and I found it in this book. I have now purchased a book of his paintings to further my interest. This small book was exactly what I was looking for.

Excellent book on Lucian Freud.

A great overview, especially for 10$. The reproductions were of a high quality and the text was pretty good too. The only thing lacking was close-ups of the work so you could see the painting technique which I'd have really liked.

I am very pleased with this book. The quality of the printing is great and the selection of paintings is wonderful.

Really interesting insights into the Grocery business. Who knew all the finagling and wrangling that needed to source the fruits and vegetables we take for granted in the produce section? How many people of my generation had even heard of A&P, the Walmart of retailing years ago? And who can comprehend the sheer volume of food that rolls down those checkout conveyor belts each day?My only criticism is that the middle third of the book goes into a Michael-Pollanesque discussion about healthfulness of natural foods and avoiding the food-like substances. I agree with the line of reasoning, but I've heard it already -- from Michael Pollan. Thankfully, the third portion of the book returns to the fascinating, often-nerdy aspects of what makes the local supermarket tick.The book afforded me a great deal of insight (and appreciation!) for something that I used to take for granted.

Like grocery stores themselves, Michael Ruhlman’s Grocery is all over the place, stuffed to the rafters, with numerous departments and unexpected items. It is a lot of memoir, a smattering of rants, endless lists, and a bunch of behind the scenes negotiating. Like a grocery, there’s something for everyone.Because he doesn’t have a horse in this race, Ruhlman can be neutral or critical as needed. He slams the food desert of the center aisles of supermarkets, yet admits he buys some of this poison himself because he likes it. He is critical of agriculture, but finds much to praise in a new generation of farmers who prize quality over quantity. And he digs at medicine and nutritionists in a front al attack: “Fat isn’t bad, stupid is bad.”We learn the economics of the business, how size matters, how grocers find products, and how they run their stores. The business has changed dramatically in our lifetimes. We might not have noticed because we’re in those stores every week. It’s a trillion dollar business in the USA. From the hot take-out meals (and even restaurants and bars) to the organics and the gluten-free, the mix is anything but stagnant. And it’s up to 40,000 items now, from the 5000 when he was a child. Beef sales are way down, fish is way up. Fruit is no longer seasonal. Frozen food is still blah, and there are still hundreds of sugary breakfast cereals and snack foods to wade through. Sadly, grocers are forced to stock them all because customers will go elsewhere if their particular variety is AWOL.There are aspects he has missed, like what grocers do with stale-dated foods. There’s nothing about community involvement, how the stores weave themselves into the fabric of the neighborhood. There’s no mention of all the games grocers have played, like specials and Green Stamps and loyalty programs. Or home and online shopping. And he never addresses customer complaints, like why there are 24 checkout lanes when only four are ever open at once. And it really could use some photos.Grocery is a kind of love letter to Cleveland, Ruhlman’s hometown. He goes back to the grocers of his youth, and makes them the focal point of the book. On the one hand it is cloying, but on the other he had to make some grocer his example, so why not the chain he grew up loving? Michael Ruhlman grew up in Cleveland with a father who loved grocery stores, and eventually took such an interest in them himself that he wrote "Grocery," this volume that looks at these important places from just about every angle.Ruhlman discusses some of the history of the retail food business going back more than a century. Twentieth-century giant A&P rose and eventually fell, and change in the industry has been constant—Walmart and Whole Foods have been drivers of change in recent decades. The author focuses on Heinen's, a Cleveland-area chain, and recalls their history in Northeast Ohio. I've been in retail advertising for over 20 years, working in categories of everything from lawn mowers to women's performance apparel, but never groceries. The book isn't just educational, it's thoroughly entertaining, as well. I didn't realize how much I invested in Ruhlman's relationship with his father until the last two chapters. It got me. I loved this book from beginning to end. (You'll want to google images of the Heinen's in downtown Cleveland after you're finished; it doesn't disappoint.)

When planning trips, especially overseas, I tend to go a bit overboard with the travel guides. I'll buy three or four and read them cover to cover. So, In preparation for my "babymoon" later this month, I started my research by ordering Rick Steves' "Best of Ireland," National Geographic's "Ireland" and a "Top 10 Dublin." The Dublin guide was great, but the other two were disappointing. The National Geographic guide had beautiful photos, but it was confusing and lacked specific recommendations and helpful info about visiting sites. Rick's book read as negative to me and oddly soured me for a bit on our decision to go to Ireland at all. A lot of sites were described by Rick as being overly touristy or not worth the hype. Appreciate the honesty, but it really felt as if Rick didn't like Ireland that much.Growing frustrated, I opted for Fodor's "Essential Ireland" to help me plan out the rest of our itinerary. I always have good luck with Fodor's so why I decided not to include their guide in my initial purchase is beyond me. Anyway, as expected, this guide was super helpful, insightful, full of suggestions about where to go, stay, and shop in a variety of price points and it offers the best overview of what Ireland is like today - which I always like reading. I also love the little side bars on regional food and specialties sprinkled throughout.Bottom line: if you get one guide in Ireland, make it this one.

Separated into sections for easy reading. Is helping us plan a trip to Ireland. Gives a good idea of what to expect and what we want to see. Just like other Fodor books.

Best travel guide ever!!!!!

I regret buying the three DK eye witness books. The print is so small, I am not able to ready them.Wished I could return them earlier. but I did not realize how small the print was until I opened the Italy book.I am a travel agent and in business for more than 35 years and have never encountered a travel guide with this small print..I likes the Fodor books with their details much better even though the print is not a whole lot bigger.

Writing is tiny and it's not a guide you can use traveling. It's more of an encyclopedia on Ireland. Couldn't use it for our trip. It's fine if you want information overload but horrible for planning a trip. And make sure you have your reading glasses out or you can't read it.

After viewing an older version at our public library, I knew I wanted to have the newest version to take with me on our trip. Looking forward to reading this a little mor throughly.

Great book, tons of good information.

We drove all over Ireland and used this as a guide. Once we tried out a stop because it was recommended, it ended up being way off our course and not worth it. Otherwise I think it was helpful to get a quick synopsis of our agenda items.

Storying, on the other hand, is an activity which everyone engages in to some extent, and it is a skill which can easily be worked on even by people who have no literacy skills. This makes it a very attainable and reproducible evangelistic technique.The book naturally made me curious as to what a story as envisaged by the author might sound like. The book itself does not contain example stories because, as the author asserts, storying is an oral communication form, not a written one. Videos of example stories can be accessed through the author's website StoryingTheScriptures, and these should give the viewer confidence that a smooth and polished presentation is completely unnecessary for engaging storytelling.In my opinion this book is one of the most effective resources on evangelism that I have ever encountered, and I highly recommend it.

Dilllon provides a good balance between the "why" and "how" of storying. It is clear that the author's intention is that the reader be able to read the book and then put it into practice . She deals with the most common objections to the use of storying such as "Its not my style" or "I can't do this". Personal examples encourage the reader to overcome their objections and to start using Bible Stories. Dillon's website storyingthescriptures.com provides additional resources to complement the book, including videos of updated story sets and other languages. For me, this is an essential resource for those wanting to make an impact in a world which has shut their ears to the gospel through traditional means.

Orality is something I have had an interest in for over a decade and been experimenting with mostly in a Western culture. Now, being in West Africa where storying is king, I needed this book to help me wade through and gain further insight into the application. I would have loved more direction in story sets but there is sufficient to make this work. I still wrestle with the difference between memorizing and telling a story. I know that will come. The book systematically walks through many of the key questions one should consider as they begin the journey of storying the Bible. As a former cross-cultural worker in Central and South America, this resource answers many of the questions that I faced. While on the field I received a significant amount of training on storying, and have read several other books on the topic. This book provides the best summation of those I have seen.The book starts by providing the reader with the reasoning behind the use of storying. There is nothing really new here for those familiar with storying, but it is definitely something that those new to storying may find interesting.Dillion quickly addresses the main questions that many readers will need to consider while choosing and preparing stories. Understanding the worldview of those whom one intends to the share the stories with is a critical part of the preparation process. Other resources may be needed to actually help one work through that discovery process, but Dillion does a good job of showing the reader how that impacts what stories are chosen. According to the author, one should then select stories that challenge those beliefs and reveal God's glory.After discussing how to craft stories and sets of stories, Dillion addresses one the most difficult parts of storying. How to facilitate discussion and actually use the stories effectively in shaping a change in worldview is every much an art as crafting the stories themselves. I thought Dillon did a good job addressing the topic, and provides the reader some excellent tools to help in that area.The final two parts of the book address training others to become storytellers, and adapting stories for specific context. Storying can be used evangelistically and for discipleship, and the book provides several things to consider in each context.As previously mention, I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in understanding the basic concepts of storying. There are many examples and illustrations that are very useful, especially for those in cross-cultural ministry.

I found this book to be very helpful in showing the great value of Bible Storying and then helping the reader actually begin to put it into practice. Christine Dillon has taken this amazing strategy and made it very accessible to those who would like to begin on this journey of biblical storying. I have used it in teaching and recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about telling the Gospel through story.
