About the Author

Professor emeritus of operations research at Stanford University. Dr. Hillier is especially known for his classic, award-winning text, Introduction to Operations Research, co-authored with the late Gerald J. Lieberman, which has been translated into well over a dozen languages and is currently in its 8th edition. The 6th edition won honorable mention for the 1995 Lanchester Prize (best English-language publication of any kind in the field) and Dr. Hillier also was awarded the 2004 INFORMS Expository Writing Award for the 8th edition. His other books include The Evaluation of Risky Interrelated Investments, Queueing Tables and Graphs, Introduction to Stochastic Models in Operations Research, and Introduction to Mathematical Programming. He received his BS in industrial engineering and doctorate specializing in operations research and management science from Stanford University. The winner of many awards in high school and college for writing, mathematics, debate, and music, he ranked first in his undergraduate engineering class and was awarded three national fellowships (National Science Foundation, Tau Beta Pi, and Danforth) for graduate study. Dr. Hillier’s research has extended into a variety of areas, including integer programming, queueing theory and its application, statistical quality control, and production and operations management. I'm impressed with this book, it looks like new! I love it!

I bought this book to accompany my connect subscription as I don't care for their "smartbook". It was marked as used however when I got the book it was brand new in the plastic with the access code which I unfortunately already paid for but ended up giving it to someone else in my class to use.

This book was shipped brand new in the cellophane wrapping. Very pleased.

Found this book when looking for an introduction to function optimization and got very well surprised by the way it is presented. Can be followed by anyone without any extraordinary aptitude for maths. Clear, to the point, with simple examples that can be followed, right after theory.

For anyone who has ever visited a "failed state", an awful lot of Paul Collier's observations will resonate. What he accomplishes in this short and brilliant book is to put the phenomenon into context in an understandable way. While I think his proposed remedies may fall short, I feel I have gained a new clarity about the problem of those who are left behind in the new global economy, the ones who seem unable to break out of stagnation or precipitous decline (i.e. the bottom billion).Collier sees a series of serious obstacles (or "traps") that the bottom billion face. First, there is conflict: most of these countries are threatened with violence either from without or within. War is obviously detrimental to economic development, in particular as the bottom billion tend to get caught in the negative feedback loop of funding the military only to become victims of coups. Second, the possession of raw materials - the "natural resource trap" - does not help: not only they can they divert attention from necessary reforms, but they raise the value of local currencies, thereby choking off diversification of nascent sectors in the economy, e.g. manufacturing. Third, the bottom billion tend to be landlocked and hence dependent on neighbors, with whom they must intimately cooperate and coordinate. Fourth, they tend to suffer from chronic bad governance and poor policy choices. While brave reformers may emerge, Collier notes, they need skilled administrators and time to implement policies, both of which are rare to come by or sustain; indeed they often end up in exile or prison.Unfortunately, Collier observes, the tools for climbing out of this configuration of traps - many countries suffer from more than one, most of them in Africa - are difficult to apply. Aid can help to promote growth, but cannot suffice without private sector involvement; it is also subject to both diminishing returns and the habit of helping countries that are already doing pretty well. Furthermore, efforts to correct trade policies, in particular by tariff incentives against Asia that would nurture their manufacturing bases, are very difficult to implement, not to forget agree upon. This leaves military intervention for purposes of promoting stability and the formulation of "charters", new laws, and international regimes to promote development - also extremely problematic in any practical sense.Collier comes up with a combination of these remedies that I find unrealistically hopeful: charters (e.g. investment protocols for private investors), selective foreign military interventions in the service of regional stability, trade protection from the Asian manufacturing juggernaut, and specific types of aid (helping the worst off, taking more risks for innovative policies, the provision of able administrators in the crucial first years, and the like). Moreover, Collier suggests that a coalition of NGOs, governments, businesses, and governments must act in concert, with common goals and methods.It is very difficult for me to see how all of these forces could align in any sustained manner, particularly in the current political climate that seems to fall back on populist nationalism, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to try. A review this short cannot do justice to the breadth of Collier's vision, of course. Nonetheless, as he makes clear, many of these policies require massively complex coordination, not just globally but also regionally, according to which nation-states would agree on goals and pursue them, such as the development of logistical infrastructure in the furtherance of international trade. Would Nigeria by willing to invest in ports so that Niger could ferry its manufactured products to China?Recommended with enthusiasm. This book is essential to understanding international economics that takes politics into consideration.

I had to buy this book for class. I think that it is wonderfully written and definitely gives you insight into how undeveloped navigates and increasingly global and competitive economy. Often times the news makes is seen very black and white. If a nation would just do this it would succeed if " "if a nation would raise wages or invest in tech it would do better." The truth of the matter is, it really isn't that simple and there are a lot of factors that cause those in the "bottom billion" to struggle. This book really does highlight those issues in a way that is easy to understand, but also gets you thinking. I would recommend this book if you have any interest in international business, economics, politics or studies. It gives really good insight that may otherwise be glossed over in a class or on TV.

Already ten years old this book is still worth a read since the details are most likely still relevant to the bottom billion and perhaps others besides. In particular I note the relevant similarities to my own State of Alaska which is primarily a resource extracting state and has some of the characteristics of failing countries that Dr. Collier describes - though certainly Alaska has succeeded in saving funds for the rainy day we are in now due to the drop in oil prices. This book is loaded with detailed economic research. One thing I did notice missing though was information on global warming and its impact on those bottom billion - but this book was published in 2007 and I think much of the data on warming and its devastation of economies in those areas of Africa and the Middle East which elsewhere I read leads to migration and civil war over resources certainly should be part of this book if it is updated any time soon. On the whole the book is of course very negative in outlook though the last bit contains suggestions in each area discussed in the book regarding what we can do to help though of course in explaining each of these areas of concern Paul Collier and his assistants have done a pretty thorough job of explaining how difficult all of those ideas would be to put into place. Still, very informative and interesting.

Barely into the first few pages of Penelope Lively’s thoroughly engaging LIFE IN THE GARDEN, the impatient child that annoyingly resides in me flipped ahead to see the expected plant pictures. There weren’t any.Illustrations, yes --- exquisite page-sized line drawings by Katie Scott separate the six chapters, a cross between William Morris wallpaper designs and what you might find in the best adult coloring books. And, of course, the dust jacket blooms with the colorful profusion of pressed flower artistry by Cheryl Welch. But no identifying plant photographs!In prose that’s as blithe as her name, Lively tosses in plant varieties, both common and botanical, like currants into a fruit cake --- the more the merrier. And she admits to keeping her iPad handy for calling up unfamiliar specimens online when she herself reads gardening books with no pictures. I briefly wondered if I should be doing the same to accompany LIFE IN THE GARDEN.Here’s when I admit to being what some kindly call an “intuitive” (unschooled) gardener, one slowly succumbing to horticultural panic. Does my garden contain examples of bad or even vulgar taste in plant combinations? Have I been seduced by commercial nurseries to choose bigger rather than better plants? And so on and so on…If I’d continued that line of thinking, LIFE IN THE GARDEN might have left me feeling inferior and incompetent even before finishing the Introduction. But Lively, both a Booker and Carnegie Award winner, knows what she’s doing down to the smallest detail. I soon realized that while good gardening books need pictures, great ones don’t. I was in the presence of greatness.Having spent most of her 80-odd years creatively messing around in gardens (her own and other people’s), an important lesson among the many Lively enticingly shares is that the garden of one’s imagination is every bit as real and life-enhancing as the gardens one aspires to create out of the opportunities (or lack of them) at hand.When that realization dawned --- I can almost hear her saying “use your imagination” --- I was hooked, ready to explore a world of very visual prose as she wandered purposefully through a selective history of famous literary garden references; gardens and visual art; gardens as social architecture; fashion in gardening; even gardens as expressions of power. It baffles me why two reviewers praised this book here to the moon and then gave it only 4 stars. It is what it is, and I can understand that one might not rate it the best book ever written (it isn't), but for what it is, I found it very enjoyable. Brits, of course, are famous for their gardening chops, and this talented writer was undaunted to jump in and write some of her thoughts about them and their gardens.

An urbane if one is permit and affectionate history of gardens and gardening and gardeners by a committed and greatly talented writer and gardener. Details and tales abound with keen and relevant references to writers and researchers as well to the apposition of town and country. The history of allotments and their role in sustaining people was a relevation and helpful insight into many Brits. Delicious and definitely delightful.

This is the perfect book to take with you into the garden. It will inspire you to expand your gardening and help you connect with what is already growing. I received an ecopy ARC from Netgalley. I will buy a print copy for my garden visits. It seems more fitting.

This is one of the best reads i’ve had all year, for it paints an in depth picture of the pathology that afflicts our current Preidient, as described by a panel of psychiatrists and psychologists meeting at a Yale symposium. Indeed, I made a list of the personality disorders described for him and keep in on my phone; it’s a wonderful reference guide to explain the truly screwed up behavior Trump shows daily. Much of it is expected “e.g malignant narcissism” but also much to me is new (e.g “a present hedonist” who cares not what came before, or what will come after, but only about what’s happening now and how it affects him.)The rap on the book comes from academic physicians who cite the Goldwater rule, which says you shouldn’t diagnose a person’s pathology unless you’ve examined them directly. I’m an academic and can assure you otherwise. The contributors in the book take that argument on directly, and carefully qualify their diagnoses based upon the behavior they see from afar. They also argue that Trump is the most powerful person in the world with his finger on the nuclear button...understanding his pathology “trumps” all other concerns.History will reference this book when it analyzes Trump’s personality, pathology, and performance. I recommend it enthusiastically.

Most discerning Americans know Trump is a narcissist who mixes lies with delusion, slanders freely, and moment to moment must have the spotlight turned on him, even if it means, for example, undercutting his Secretary of State Tillerson and potentially dragging the world into a war in service to his ever-faltering self-esteem.Lee's book appears to have been written by among the best that psychiatry/psychology have to offer. The authors are deeply moral professionals who see through the glass clearly, something we don't get often enough from mental health professionals.What is most awesome about *The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump* is that most of what is written here rings true. The authors introduce concepts I was not familiar with such as those relating to Trump’s relationship with time. Unlike most of us who consider the future impact of our actions, Trump responds in the moment, to assuage his ego needs vs. thinking ahead about the harm his comments might cause. We are witness to his in-the-moment orientation in his attachment to Twitter. Some journalists and pundits have convinced themselves, and tried to convince us, that Trump’s Tweets and other interference's are strategic, meant to give him “wins”. The authors here confirm that this simply is not so. The delusion that Trump has some secret wisdom leaves us in danger of following Trump down the rabbit hole to our own destruction.Trump’s presidency is a threat to our democratic republic, our freedoms, our values, and for the spiritually-inclined, our very souls. I am grateful to these courageous authors for doing what they can to save America and the world from Trump’s toxicity. History will look kindly on them; they chose well. It is up to each of us to do what little we can to protect what we have here in an era of vulnerability as a deranged leader tears at the fabric of our nation in service of his emotional needs. It can only get worse.

You already know a lot about this book just from the title. What got my attention right away was that it's not written by one person like the vast majority of the books about Donald Trump. Instead, it is a collection of essays by 27 different psychology professionals, whether working psychologists or psychiatrists. These people are all highly trained and are so concerned about the mental health of the President of the United States that they are violating the spirit of the ethical guidance from their professional organizations--namely, not to analyze the mental health of someone you have never examined.What motivated the choice to make these insights public? This controversial decision is explained at the outset by Drs. Herman and Lee: "the public trust is also violated if the profession fails in its duty to alert the public when a person who holds the power of life and death over us all shows signs of clear, dangerous mental impairment." Given the power at his command, they feel that the mental health of the president should get at least as much scrutiny as that of other citizens. They have concluded that Donald Trump has a serious personality disorder and is a danger to the country. For that reason, they feel that they must honor their "duty to warn" the public of the danger he poses, (just as they have a professional "duty to warn" if a patient is a danger to himself or others.)Since the president appears unwilling to undergo a genuine physical examination--much less a mental health one--these professionals can give the public insights based on the unusually plentiful record of Donald Trump's public actions, comments and even tweets. As both candidate and president (and even during the decades before), Trump was someone who sought the limelight and whom the media found fascinating and worth extensive coverage. He was also very accessible, very quotable and much quoted. Although these psychologists have never examined him, they have a lot of real-time observations to work with, as well as so many available written interviews, articles and books, many in Trump's own words.They also feel that, as professionals, they can address some of the questions the public has about the behavior and comments of the president, including,"Is this unusual but normal? Or is it something that should make me worried, even afraid?"You know the answers these authors all reach from the title. But they each take a different focus in their individual chapters. Here's a sample: "Unbridled and Extreme Present Hedonism", "Pathological Narcissism and Politics: A Lethal Mix"; "Sociopathy"; "Donald Trump: Is (a) Bad, (B) Mad, (C) All of the Above)"; "Why 'Crazy Like a Fox' versus 'Crazy Like a Crazy' Really Matters' 'Cognitive Impairment, Dementia and POTUS"; and so on.Some psychologists write about the effect of a president like this on the American public. "How a President Freezes Healing and Promotes Crisis", "In Relationship with an Abusive President', and "Who Goes Trump?Tyranny as a Triumph of Narcissism".There is also a chapter about the 25th amendment. And a conclusion by Noam Chomsky. One non-psychologist who provides an interesting chapter is Tony Schwartz, who wrote The Art of the Deal with Trump. In 2016 Schwartz donated his help to the Clinton campaign for free as "penance" for writing the book that brought Trump to the public attention and helped mythologize him. It's something Schwartz has regretted ever since, even donating the 2015-2016 proceeds from it to charity. Schwartz's chapter is titled, "I Wrote The Art of the Deal with Donald Trump: His Self-Sabotage Is Rooted in His Past" and considers his strict father and early life somehow gave him the idea that everything in life is either a success or a failure--and he can't accept failure.)The writers have different styles, but generally include a wealth of real-life examples and write in a way that avoids jargon. On the face of it, it would seem that Trump's supporters wouldn't want to have anything to do with this book. However, it's not a left-wing hatchet job; it's professional psychologists analyzing the President of the United States in his actions and comments. If anything, it seems more important for his supporters to read and think about all this than it would be for his critics (even if Trump supporters wind up rejecting its conclusions, they'll be well-informed on why so many people feel that way). Being a cradle Catholic, Mary was always a presence in my life. But for all the pretty porcelain statues, I never exactly felt I could relate to her. I could respect that she was the mother of our Lord, but how could I possibly relate to a woman who was born perfect who I had no chance of realistically becoming similar to? Imagine my surprise when one of the women in the book asked the very same question! By taking a nice cross-section of women---various cultural backgrounds, ages and religious fervor--you see that Mary is universal and can offer something unique and personal to whoever approaches her in prayer. There were times when I did cry at some of the points made. One or two of them spoke directly to me in terms of things I'd been praying about but never shared with anyone else. I'm not a mom, so how could I relate to her raising Jesus then following Him to His destiny on Calvary? But the writer makes the point that even those who are childless can act maternally to anyone we come across in a day's time and in essence, bring Christ into the world again. Never thought of it that way! It's not a long book or one with any theological concepts too lofty or sublime. Just some women talking about "our tainted nature's solitary boast" in very real terms. She's not only with the saints in Heaven, but in her maternal love for us, reaches out to us to bring our hearts and minds not to her, but to her Son. What a comforting thought! You will definitely enjoy this book and I know I will be going back to it again and again.

I am not a Catholic, but I have a passion for spiritual books, and Moyer's Mary and Me has earned a permanent place on my "inspiration" shelf.While solidly based in the Catholic faith tradition, the book does not have a theological agenda. Moyer fully and clearly explains spiritual terms and Biblical stories, making the book accessible to a wide range of readers. Her language is fresh and lively and the personal stories are moving; in fact, I couldn't put the book down and read it in one sitting.Moyer has asked an honest question of real women: "What has Mary meant to you?" She has not used the interviews to argue a point; rather, she has gathered the stories, listened to their messages, and let the stories themselves decide the structure, form, and message of the book.The Mary that emerges is rich and complex. The Mary that women come to know through the challenges, traumas, and joys of their lives is not the beatific image of the Renaissance portraits. As one women says, "She is a strong-willed, courageous women who defied convention and did the will of God." Another says, "Mary was a human being, a real women, a mother and a mother who suffered the ultimate loss."The women who Moyer interviews share their most intimate stories: abusive parents, career crises, health issues, lost loves. And Moyers presents the tales of spiritual struggle and transformation with great tenderness and respect. In many places, I found myself moved to tears.Moyer's language is snappy and appealing; at the same time, she masterfully transitions between her personal stories and analysis and the voices of the women she has interviewed. The two blend seamlessly.Mary and Me is a satisfying, entertaining, touching, enriching read.

I really enjoyed the stories in this book. It would be a great gift for friends. It’s also a nice, easy read and very relatable.

Maybe Mary and Me won't be your cup of tea. Maybe you don't even really "get" the whole Mary thing...and you'd be in good company. This book is filled with reflections and insights from Catholic women, some of whom weren't always big fans of Mary. The author herself shares some reflections that had me laughing and grabbing the tissues.In my world, there's a huge value to things that make me consider life differently. I don't always agree with the things that force my different perspective, but I do value them. It's one of the reasons why I so value my relationships with the friends in my life I can disagree with without the tingling in my scalp that signals anger and frustration.I found this sort of value in Mary and Me. I also found new insight into the role of the Blessed Mother in my own life.Consider suffering, for example - I often turn to Mary when I'm in pain, but I have only ever been able to articulate it vaguely. "Well, she was at the foot of the Cross," I'll reason in my head...and though I know that wasn't an easy thing to do, it seems sort of lame.This book is one I'll lend out, though, be assured I'll be keeping track of who has it, because I know I'll be turning back to it. It's also the sort of book I'll be purchasing for friends...because I can think of quite a few women who need the wisdom, comfort, and insight that's included. You don't have to be Catholic to appreciate that God's mom loves you. You don't have to be a "Mary freak" to smile at the company of another woman's shoulder in times of challenge and pain. You don't have to be a big reader to make it through this relatively short book.
